Then change it to:

Variable Content Magazines

Content can be a little or a lot. Or as someone I served in the Army with, who described Texas measurement language:

"A smidgen or a Shit Load".

How 'bout just "AK magazines" or "Glock magazines" or "Beretta magazines"?

Because they do come in different sizes - big ones and little ones. Big ones are the 40 round East Germans I have few of, 30 rounders of numerous countries, 20 round Hungarian Tanker mags, then you get into the weird ones like came with the 2 Romanian AK-74's I bought in 1998 that were cut down 30's. I made those Romanians into AIMS-74's after the AWB sunset.

For the longest time in the M-16 world, it was the 20 round mag. For the 18 months I was in Central America, I carried a vintage (and well worn) XM177E2 in my aircraft, loaded with a 20 round mag, and 4 other loaded 20 round spares. To use a 30 round mag was too unwieldy in the confines of an MH-6 Little Bird.

I don't know the origins of the language regarding"Hi-Capacity" magazines, because I never used it. I am guessing it was marketing language by peddlers of these spring loaded ammunition feeding devices, during and after the 1994-2004 Assault Weapons Ban. The dumb ass anti-gun advocates only picked up and utilized what was already being used in numerous ads in firearms periodicals and gun accessory catalogs. I think we have our own community to blame for creating such language. Now the cat is out of the bag and it's never going back in.

No shit.

One would assume the most common type, and if the speaker was after some not-so-common type, they'd specify.

"AK mag" = "30 rounds"

"10 round AK mag"

"tanker mag"

It was "double stack" that was used by "the peddlers".

The phrase "high capacity magazines" was introduced in the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban.

(we've gone over this multiple times here)

Yeah, no shit, but there's too many variations out there, and how many people that are just getting into AK's, AR's, etc. know what's going on? We take that learning curve for granted because we've been around this stuff for a while. You're an Army Vet. I shot my first M16a1 in 1978, and all I had were 20 round mags.

I was buying newly imported AK's in the early 80's before some people here on the Files were born. How many know that in the early 90's when you bought a Colt AR, that the 20 round mag had a limiter in it to prevent loading more than 10 rounds? The first thing I'd do is take that thing out.

I never paid attention to "double stack" advertising language, because it was redundant. I knew what was going on. I also knew that in the 1994-1999 period of the AWB when I was still in uniform, trunk loads of magazines were going off base to surplus joints down the road. Incredible black market during those years. I busted a couple of offenders myself.
