Default Value Used Saiga 12 with Wood Furniture

Sorry guys I have to post a asking a value thread.

Thinking of selling my used Saiga 12 with wood furniture that I picked up on Arms last year or the year before for $500.

I don't need the cash just been thinning my collection the last few months as it is a sellers market. I don't want to gouge but what is the higher end?

It has some internal modifications that for the life of me I don't remember. Trigger and maybe choke (anyway for me to see?).

I also have a Mossberg 590 that I am happy with so wondering if I need 2 shotty's.

I was looking on gunsmoker and really couldn't find anything the same with wood furniture.

My main plan after buying was taking off the chewed up wood and at least trying to make it lighter as it is a beast.

As always guys thanks for the thoughts and comments.

If I sell it will be locally. I always wanted a Vepr 12 more.

I figured this was a coin flip between Vepr/Saiga's and Shotguns sub forums.

AKA: I think I have a drum and 3 or 4 mags that I would probably include.

Check out Gunbrokers completed auctions. The converted Saiga 12s that have sold recently went for around $1000-1300. A non-converted sporter sold for $750 recently.

I think you’ll have a hard time getting more than $1200. Vepr 12s with factory folding stocks are still selling for right around $1000.

Thanks, I just looked at live and not completed.

Would the wood be a plus or just a pass because of the chips and scratches on them?

All the converted S12s are going for about the same price, give or take $200. It’s just going to depend on the buyer and if they like those features or not. If they plan on shooting it a few dings shouldn’t matter.

So, first off...sweet gun.

I've converted my saiga to one very similar with poly furniture. The handguards have to be custom fitted for the larger barrel and smaller receiver slot, so if you did swap out the wood, you'd have to make those mods to whatever you used. Overall, my vote would go to just leaving the wood if you're trying to sell as its probably more trouble than its worth to swap out(the handguards at least) for poly. The extra weight does soften the recoil a bit, so its a trade-off.

As for price, you're in a good spot...assuming the original gun wasn't a Russian vodka-special with barely functioning gas ports and cracked trunion. It appears to be a 2011 gun, so should be a good timeframe. Not sure how many rounds you've put through it and how reliable it's been. Either way, if I wanted to build your gun today, it'd be well over $1000. For just the base unconverted saiga, $750 is a touch high, that might be NIB or lightly used. For a used saiga with a trigger group conversion done by a "gunsmith" its a toss up, if it was a Legion converted gun, yeah I could see $1000... if its a 'I got it from a guy, who got it from a guy, who got it from a guy who did it on his kitchen table' ...that might be more of a $5-600 gun. Now, none of that prices in the barrel components. The front end barrel conversion is about $400 in parts. So the absolute cheapest I could see someone making your gun is $900. I'm never lucky enough to find stuff like that for the deal you got

So, long story short, you can ask whatever price you want...the people that know will pay, and those that don't will haggle and you'll still wind up getting more than you paid.

Thank you for your input.

I think I am going to keep her. Interesting about the handguards (makes sense).

Is it possible to refinish the wood furniture to make it look better it I decide to keep it that way just like AKM wood? Question for anyone.

Yeah, hard to tell exactly, but the wood doesn't look like it has really deep gouges, so a strip and refinish might be all you need. In fact, you might be able to get away with stain touchup pen and dab of polyurethane if its just those small spots where it looks like the finish has flaked off.

Cheers!

Got my feelers out to Krazy to see what he has to say. If it happens I will repost pics.

Thanks again guys for the input.

OK, Krazy said he can probably redo the wood but he also told me it isn't original. So my next question is, "did Saiga 12's only come in with the black basic furniture of a typical hunting rifle like the other calibers?"

I wonder where someone got Russian shotgun size furniture or was it just modified?

This thing is getting more interesting for me. I need to pic a color and get it off and mailed.

The wood was added front sight and rear sight too the original sight looks like it’s still there on the gas block the wood more than like clearanced to fit the bigger barrel it’s not hard. Looks good I wouldn’t redo the wood if your going to sell. You’d probably get 1000-1200

Thanks, I am going with redoing the wood and keeping it. With this recent thread it is starting to grow on me.

I think if I can get it in nicely done wood furniture I can have a really unique shotgun.

You won’t regret keeping it and the value won’t go down
