Default Ak mag pouch for plate carrier/vest recommendations

Iíve been looking for mag carrier for a plate carrier or vest that excepts AK mags, but everywhere I look I read mixed reviews on how well they fit and clear AK mags. What are you running pros and cons?

I use three of the 5.11 tactical ak mag pouches. You can use a flap or bungees. I just tuck the flap in and use the bungees. Have them mounted to a shellback banshee and haven’t had any issues yet. Mags are snug in there but are not hard to remove

I prefer single mag carriers over the ones that hold two in each pouch. Having two in each pouch makes it unnecessarily bulky and hard to go prone or maneuver your rifle

5.11 AK mag pouches are not bad but if you do not use either bungee or flap their retaining is just so so. After some research I settled for these:
https://store.usgruntgear.com/akmodopo.html
Great retention for open pouch and they are built like tanks. Also added benefit (for me) they are perfect fit for AUG magazines.

It flops back and forth badly when running. I wouldn't recommend it

I bought the exact same set of pouches several years ago, when I got my first plate carrier. I had the same problem. The mags are retained fine, but everything flops around when you are running. In fact, that is one of the main reasons that I prefer a slick plate carrier + chest rig.

Just figured I would throw out some ideas.
Good feedback

+1 for the hsgi tacos, fit anything from ak to fal to ar and adjustable tension. While pricey if you have more than one type of rifle i think its well worth it.

Sarma TST RK pouches.
https://www.varusteleka.com/en/produ...ne-pouch/33279

These things are durable, 1000D cordura, sort of a ranger green, and fairly inexpensive. The Finnish M05 stuff might be an option as well.

I had some old, ( don't know who made them, ) pouches with flaps and buckles, etc, that worked but were bulky, heavy and slow to access the magazines.

I switched over to Blue Force Gear's Ten-Speed, ( TSP ) magazine pouches, specifically their SR25 twin mag pouches. They obviously retain 308 magazines, but also readily retain AR and AK magazines. I like the flexibility in case I decide to carry a different weapon.

https://www.blueforcegear.com/ten-sp...-308-mag-pouch

Having fast access to the magazines along with shaving off some weight and bulk from the plate carrier is always a good thing.

I just ordered from Wilde Custom Gear. They make ak specific pouches that are 1000d, US made and well priced. I’m excited to see what arrives.

Dlm84,

I had the same problem as you recently. I wanted to put AK mags on the exterior of a range bag. The solution I came up with was to order from this website:

https://armada-store.com/

they sell all sorts of neat russian army surplus stuff, lots of it new production. Go to that website, type "mag pouch" in the search bar, and choose your favorite. I picked the OD green double mag pouch. Bought two of them, they hold my akm and ak74 mags. best of all, they are new production, high quality, and seem to be really tough. I think its best to buy those that are designed for what you're going to put in them. Plus they were like 20 bucks. As an added bonus, they safely hold ar-15 mags too, so they are really worth the price.

hope this helps

That site is very cool and looks like they have nice prices but,,,,,,,,,,, they are located in RUSSIA so I didn't look at shipping prices because of the other thread about shipping times and if you will even get your stuff.

Just a heads up but they do have nice stuff but buy at your own risk these days.

But it’s a dry heat,

You may be right about shipping from russia as of right now. But I will say when I ordered mine last year, (as well as some other items from a different Russian online store) the shipping wasn’t wildly expensive or long. I thought it was reasonable. When you check out on armada store, you get some different shipping options. Pick what speed you want. But obviously the faster, the more expensive. However I just don’t want people to be discouraged from purchasing good products due to shipping, because I had only positive experiences.

Back to the original question,

Another option I have used is one of those cheap Chinese type 63 or type 81 chest rigs. The type 63 won’t close over the mags but the 81 will. If you have a somewhat low profile plate carrier, you can use the chest rig separately. The advantage to that is you can have an individual chest rig for specific rifles that may take different magazines. The chest rigs also hold AR mags. And they’re really cheap and I got mine from amazon. however not tacticool if that’s what you’re going for.

Not a slam Layne just a FYI kind of thing.

I personally rarely by from overseas even when things were normal and now with things getting stupid I definitely won't. But some guys will and that site does have some cool stuff. I will have to save it for more normal times if it happens.

I guess the plain shipping is a crap shoot but if you pay more bucks you could have better luck.

I like tacos as well. There may be other pouches out there are are superior for any certain type of mag, but the flexibility of the design just rocks. I mean, you can put Saiga 12 mags in them for crying out loud...not to mention just about any kind of 20+ round rifle mag ever made. It's the king of the BFPU.

The Armada store doesn't look that bad on shipping out of Russia. All you have to do is pick items then click checkout. While filling the address in it will update costs you can pick for shipping. The example below is a 4 AK mag molle. I'm used to getting ripped off on shipping, local prices and anything else.

4 AK mag pouch.

As far as shipping from Russia goes, I’ve never had ANY issues. I’ve ordered from Ivan Tactical several times. The only problems I’ve ever experienced have come from the good ole USPS and FedEx here in the U.S. For some reason, several items have made it to Atlanta and then disappeared...And that’s why I don’t live in Atlanta anymore

These NCstar vest are on sale for 19.99. Not the best quality but something a little more modern than the Chicom rig for someone on a budget.
