jwc0506, I'd consider the 5.45x39 Vepr made at the Morlot factory in Russia to be an AK-74 variant. It has an RPK style receiver. So, add that one to your list. I have one chambered in 223Rem. It's a sweet shooting (and looking) rifle.

Info about the ak-74:

First off they are NOT for everyone! Most seem to prefer the more powerfull 7.62x 39 round, but there's a few of us who like the option of the 74 due to the less recoil, and better accuracy. The 74 also has an updated cone styled break which may help reduce muzzle flash and movement of the barrel while firing the rifle. There's not a huge amount of 74 models to choose from un-fortunately... All i've seen online are: Bulgies, Tantals, sar-3(not in kits tho...), and that about it on the 74 rifles....Just read that the BULGARIAN AK-74 is identical to the Russian rifle except for arsenal mark. So the Bulgy has got to be an as authentic as we're gonna get here in the u.s for an AK.... Unless the Russians start marketin their AK'S here the only choices we got are the Bulgies and Tantals in the 74 kits.

Wow,that's a nice looking kit.I have a fixed stock Bulgy 74 and the wood on mine is blonde.I didn't get as much receiver section with mine as on yours.Mine looks absolutely new though.I have most of an East German 74 but not somplete.I'm selling the Bulgy kit to a friend as I have a K-var kit that's never been a rifle. The new K-var gas tube is just a hair too long to fit the Bulgy kit so I guess they are fitted but it's not off by much.

Thanks guys.... Saw somethin like a vepr on gunsamerica sight, But don't know much about them. The Bulgy AK & Tantal is the next best thing next to the Russian counterpart of the 74's... Need to read about the Veprs and east german ak's, never read much about them "YET", but i will. JWC

Hillbilly/RAF,

Gorgeous rifles, guys! I want an AK-74 so bad I can't stand it! All my money is in 5.56 rifles and .30 calibers.

Money is just a little tight right now. I'm leaning toward a side folder with wood furniture, a la "raf32."

vmtz, that looks great! I especially like how the bayo goes with the stock set (AK fashon is important, right). I'm going to try and build one just like it. What are your compliance parts?

No, this is an Arsenal SLR-105 that I just picked up as used, but you can't even tell it's ever been fired. Got a great deal including a sealed tin of 7N6, 800 rds of wolf NC, 8 mags and lots of other little extras. The rifle was worked on by Chris at AK USA to have the correct gas block with accessory lug and Warsaw length buttstock, then I added the Kobra...

Tapeo1, that's some really nice work on the stock. What stain did you use? Is the handguard wood the same type as the buttstock wood? It seems to me pretty odd that the handguards are typically darker for some reason.

Bret, I used Minwax Red Mahogony stain on the wood. No, the handguard wood doesn't match exactly with the stock. I have no idea why the Bulgarians used a different wood for the stock and lower handguard. Anyway, I got it as close as I could to match. IIRC, I may have used a little walnut stain on the stock too to get it to match the LHG better. The pic above makes it look like a better match than it really is.

In this pic, you can kinda see the color difference between the LHG, UHG and the stock...

BTW, metal was refinished with semi-gloss MolyResin over park.

One of these days, I intend on replacing the Bulgy wood with some Soviet AK74 laminated wood.

Here is mine. I put the dreaded tan tapco furniture on it because I have a wholesale account and just wanted to try a set.
The gun works great! I love it!
At this link there is more info and info/pics of a WASR22
