The idea of a model sailplane (glider) has been around for a while. Operator uses a helium balloom to take it to height, then releases it remotely for its mission. Naturely, a video "eyeball" is needed, transmitting back to the operator.
Unless the operator is familiar with the terrain a compass on the sailplane (which can also be viewed by the operator remotely) is required. Video transmissions could probably be blocked by jamming. Having the sailplane controlled by GPS would be better, but that is a bit more technical. However, GPS would make the mission a "launch and leave" operation, with no operator needed oncde the sailplane detaches from the balloom. That means the operator could be miles away, headed for points unknown, by the time the sailplane impacts its GPS point. Overall, a simple and cheap idea. |

Impressive! Was that a compass repeater on the dash??
I wonder what the set-up cost. My B-I-L was into RC aircraft for years before he finally burned out on them. Crashing his 1/4 scale P-51 vertically into the ground helped. That was before video was available. |

Not a compass repeater, but an altitude indicator.
It does look like a lot of fun. |

The helo in the OP link was used also by the Lybian rebels.
They come from a Canadian firm that only sells to "recognized governments". No civilian sales. Price: Around $100K for the one with zoom and IR capability You can do your own for a lot less! Duh! I'm thinking an electric helo with an rf camera. That said, I believe the expensive part would be the gyro stablization. Wait, they make cameras with "stablization" features already! PS: I did love that F16 video! Watched it twice! |

pretty cool videos, you can spend some big money on RC planes and Heli's but still not no where near what the big boys cost, here's one of my favorite flyby's with a f16

First person RC has been around for a while now, check it out. There is even a 3D video goggle setup.
