Hi All! New to this forum but not to the AK's. Started the experience in the early 70's when I bought a Valmet m-60 and a m-62s dirt cheap at the Tulsa gun show. They were unfired because 7.62X39 ammo was collector item stuff selling for 50 cents a rnd. RCBS made up dies for me and I made my ammo using 30 REM. brass. Things got a hole lot better when the Poly-Tech guns hit the market along with the ammo. Fast forward to 2004 I purchased my first AK-74, a Arsenal SLR 105. 5.45 ammo was available, life was good, I thought. Accuracy was disappointing, I wasn't impressed in the least. I kept reading of the accuracy some people were getting after I stumbled across these forums, so I thought I'd give a new gun a try. Called Erin at K-var to order a SGL 31-84 folder, no-luck so she sent a 31-61 telling me she would give me a call if by some chance she got a 31-84 in. This was in Feb. and I've been burn'in ammo up and lov'in it. I'm impressed not only with the accuracy, but the quality of the rifle. In both cases it puts the Bulgarian SLR-105 that I have to shame. The fit, the finish and machine-work is superb. Then Erin calls last week and asks if I was still interested in the 31-84 folder. I had an AK-itis relapse and added another to the stable. I guess you can't have too many. Again, I'm really impressed with the quality and accuracy of these rifles.

Congrats on the nice 74's. Most people rave about the SLR-105, so I'm surprised that yours wasn't that great. Then again, with AK's it seems like no matter what model you get you are in for a bit of a gamble. Some are just more accurate than others. My most accurate 7.62 AK is still an SAR-1, even though I have "better" (i.e. more expensive)7.62 AK's. Most like the SGL series, but from time to time people will complain about them too. Glad you got a couple good ones. Maybe sell the sub-par SLR and buy more ammo for the SGL's.

That SLR-105 was one of the very early ones and what got me was my son comes to my gunshop drag'in in a early century arms 74 that looked like a pos, grabs some of my 7n6 ammo and steps out back and starts hammering my 200yd. steel plates. I couldn't believe it. This $350 pos will out-group my 105. I guess he got a good one. Got a SAR-1 in for a cousin. He had to have an EO-TECH, so I mounted one up. This AK is so accurate at 200yds. it's scary. I guess it's like you say, a hit or miss deal.

I have a Arsenal ak 47 and its great. I also have a Krebs custom ak74. Alot of AK fans think Krebs is too expensive. I am absolutely impressed by thier customer service. I had sent the Kreb's rifle back to the company to have some extra custom work completed and they were extremely professional. The work was completed in a quality and timely manner. I have had allot of problems with other companies getting a quality AK product. Another positive experience I had was with Investment Grade Firearms. Jayson at IGF repaired a rifle I had bought from Lancaster (what a damn nightmare) and he did a great job. The IGF rifle (not really a Lancaster anymore because it needed allot of work) shoots with absolute accuracy. I think Arsenal and Kreb's are the way to go. There are allot of $400 to $700 rifles out there that are a gamble. I would rather pay more for a quality product and even more for absolute excellent customer service. Kreb's customer service is worth the money. Getting stuck with a Lancaster is a nightmare.
