Almost any solvent will work, as will hot water and soap.

Heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun, most of it will run off.
I also use acetone to wipe it down.

I have allways gone the WD-40 and the rags or towels that I will through away.

Some use ho water and let cosmolein go into a bucet to recycle. But if you do not have a RE-use for cosmolien is expendable consumable. Like the heat gun - hair dryer thinking though.

How old is the cosmolein - gooo-ey wet or caked ear wax - black harden film. Smell it - oil smell - wood chip and rotting pork fat smell - wax smell. Color and consistabcey?????

it comes off better with oil than with bore solvent in my experience.

I just drop a little oil on it, lightly soak a patch and rub it off. Comes off soon enough and I never really had any problem getting it off that way, even if it was caked on thick.

gasoline works well.

Also depending on your climate, put the gun in a black plastic bag full of rags or towels, leave it out in the sun, or put it in the car to bake.

With my Tokarev, I just took the plastic grips off, disassembled it, and dropped it in a pot of gasoline. Cleaned the cosmo right off, but the thing reeked for weeks and still smells of gasoline.

The easiest way I’ve found is toss the metal parts in the degreaser tank after I’m done Parkerizing. It ruins the degreaser but I’m finished with it at that point anyway. Other than that, hot soapy water works well.
The key is heat. I’ve even heard of guys just melting it off in a hot trunk.

I use a mixture of acetone and carb cleaner and a crap toothbrush. Never had a problem on metal or wood with it so far.... dont use a wire brush, ti would work well to remove the cosmo but would also mess up the finish on the gun or wood most likely.

Default kEROSINE

Tryed kerosine and it works fine, it seems a little oily but that is good to me because I do not want it to rust while soaking.

Default I have the perfect solvent mix.

We use it at work on all types of Cosmolines.
Anybody that wants the ingredients PM me. Well not anybody, EVERYBODY except Mustang74. (The guy who PM'd me and can't even spell 'Douchebag').

Hot zep purple and a nylon toilet brush will clean it off with little work. With wood just dunk it 5-10 seconds at a time and scrub the same. You should have to do all parts in a first run solution and then a clean up final solution. Why would you want to use something explosive and dangerous when there are safer solutions that don't cost anymore and you don't need a clean up run, for the cleaner ? Boiling purple zep works on ridding oil and greases prior to parkerizing so it will just fine with cosmoline. And a little goes a long way.

If you want an ordorless way of removing cosomoline use one of the orange cleaners. Spray a little on, let it sit for a couple of minutes and wipe it off with a rag. I work in an attached garage and in the winter can't use something like gas or kero.

Default Zep and orange cleaner

Sounds real good the odor of the kerosine is a little harsh but it does clean good. I will give Zep and an orange cleaner a try next time, thanks.

I found one of those home "steamers" with the wand and attachments for $20 at a yard sale. Melts the cosmoline off and steams out stock dents too!

Default Heat and Solvents

We use heated Varsol mixed with Naptha after we scrape off the excess cosmo.
The heat really matters but you must be careful how you heat the mixture. We try to use the sun by putting the mix in a black container and set it outside or put it near a heater discharge outlet.

Heat your parts the same way.

ZEP works well but not as good as our mix.

Many parts we get these days are covered in Aircraft grease not traditional Cosmoline but our mix works on grease too.

brownell's had it, maybe they still do. but what they call cosmoline may be very different from the various greases we casually refer to as "cosmoline."

real cosmoline, which is the stuff brownell's sells, might be quite different.

I used to work around spray cosmoline (an aervoe product) and it dried to a non-sticky, non-greasy honey-colored coating. I still have some from more than 10 years ago.
