Does anyone know if there is anything I need to purchase beside the stock to convert my Romanian from the wood stock to a underfolder? Kinda new to this.

You'd need the uf trunnion and some gunsmithing.
It be real easy to throw a romy sidefolder on though

You seem to be confused between a Romanian underfolder and a Bulgarian triangle sidefolder. The sidefolder requires a front latch to secure the side folding stock. You can Google Romanian underfolder or Bulgarian side folder etc. |

skinny - check with a knowledgeable AK builder who has put together Romanian under folders onto receivers. There is or are differences in the holes in the receiver - at leat it is my understanding that is trhe primary difference, as opposed to one of the other standard pattern undr folders. I know this because the builder of a couple of my own under folders had some issues putting together some Romanian underfolders several yers ago ad explained that there were diffrences to take into account with the Romanian under folders. I didn't actually ask the spcifics however I assumed that the differences would be in the hole placement fo the under folder on the receiver. Just an FYI

skinny - Sorry about the post - If you have holes allready in your receiver that might apply - if you were having the builder construct or drill the placement holes, then they would surely know - as you are using the Bulgarian undefolder.

There is no latch on the front of the receiver for an underfolder. That is for a triangle side folder. It is a long story as to what you have, what you can do, what you have in terms of tools and building skills. It is not a plug and play type assembly. So you will have to Google or use building threads on this and other sites to get an idea of the types and pricedures for building AK receivers/stocks and so forth.
There are wire right hand folders (romanian East German etc., ) that do bolt up rather simply to a standard fixed stock rear trunnion. Good Luck. with your search. |

If you put in a Romy or Bulgy underfolder you need the respective stocks hardware and trunnions.
You would have to begin by grinding the rivets of your rear trunnion down. Then take an awl or center punch and make a starting notch for your drill bit. Then drill the rivets out. You would be well advised to take the FCG and selector out before doing all this. The selector would make it uneven as you are drilling. The FCG parts would trap all the metal shavings and such. There two ways to drill the long rivets I've found. You can take a bit the size of the rivet and drill through, if doing so I'd hope to be using a drill press. Or you can use a bit smaller than a rivet and once your through set the gun up in a vice.... wrap it in a rag or something to protect it as best as possible then use a punch and hammer to punch the hollowed out rivet out of the trunnion. Technically you dont have to go any farther than it takes to remove the rear trunnion simply for the conversion. Next you would have to do the layout of the rivet pattern(which is different than a regular fixed stock trunnion) Then drill holes for the rivets. Youre probably going to want to weld up the leftover rivet hole(s). Id recommend clamping in a brass bar behind the hole area and use a mig or tig welder on low settings to do so. Then you'll need to rivet the trunnion in. Methods vary. I would recommend a press and a jig. Note a romanian underfolder trunnion uses 2 long rivets. Next youd have to drill a hole in both sides for the underfolder parts as well as two on the left side for the locking lug. Follow the pattern of the trunnion. For the detail work Id use an air grinder or dremel. Diamond cutting bits will be an amazing bonus. Final step would would be assembly and possibly finishing and touch up More work that its worth IMO when you can just buy a flat and underfolder kit. If you cant atleast build an ak, you probably shouldnt do one of these conversions. Much of the tools you need would be the same anyways. |
