Been a FAL freak for a long time, but caught the AK bug. The newer, more poisonous AK that is.
First one was a Bulgarian 74 built on and Armory USA receiver that I picked up for my fiance. She loved it and it was just right for what she needed. Of course I needed another one. I'm no rich man and the recent $400 deals have been tempting but given the misc. issues with the RR's and my apprehension to bite on a Century I have been holding off. Just the other day though a guy locally had for sale a Romy SAR 2. I got it for $400 and am actually very impressed with it. I had heard about the WASRs and wanted to stay away from them. Wanted a chrome lined barrel and got it. No cant to the sights, matching numbers, and very good fit and finish IMHO. I haven't had a chance to get this one out to the range but so far I like it a lot. Put on my Falcon Arms side folder and it is sweet. I may at some point switch out the FSB to put on a FH/MB but I am alright with the look without it. Just my .02 parisofthewest Last edited by parisofthewest; 04-17-2010 at 08:45 PM. |

Congrats and welcome to the Files.
Good luck at the range with it.

Congrats on the purchase.
You'll never be the same. ![]() Think about buying a Yugo while they are cheap and available.

The FSB and brake will be added at some point....needs to be more evil. Plus I would like to put on the bayonet.
This one did not have the upturned bolt, it's straight like the Bulgarian. Waiting on a gas tube to come in also. The guy I had picked it up from had a railed upper hg on it...kinda cool, but I have some black guards to put on it. It had the Romy folder on it when I got it, but swapped that out with my Falcon Arms folder. Came with a halfway decent tan lower hg, US made. Needs a Houge grip also...the Bulgarian has one already. I'll post some pictures soon. I drive over the road and am, well, on the road. parisofthewest |

I'll second what the good doctor said. Buy a yugo. Shop cheap for your groceries for a while. Eat Ramen and apple sauce for a while. You'd be amazed at how much you can save.

What Yugo are you guys recommending? Any links to good deals? I am a firm believer that the only thing that is better than having guns is having more of them!
Thanks parisofthewest |

Best AK deal out there right now. Go to a gunshow and check 'em out if you can find a nice one. Those milled polish rifles look nice also but we'll have to see how they pan out. I'm hoping to find a nice one at a gunshow myself.

OK. Thanks. Those are the ones I found. Most look to be Century from the HGs and goofy stock.
Classic Arms has a milled Polish for 7 Bills. Very nice looking. I need to stock another caliber like I need a hole in the head. Maybe once I get the 5.45 up to adequate levels... parisofthewest |

I've played around with a old Romanian Cujir "ROMAK 2" for years...
It is about the same as the SAR 2 -predates it. Seems a good solid AK as any to me.

That is the question ... to invest in a new front sight assembly and a muzzle brake for a stock SAR-2, or -3 for that matter.
My, oh my, this is one puzzle that can have you twisted up in knots. The brake is kind of superflous IMO. My $$$ go to more milsurp 7N6 ball ammo instead. Gather thy daisies while ye may. And if you need a smithie to perform the work at $40 an hour to boot ... well ... things taken for appearances really start to add up. I do concur tho: SAR-2s do indeed ROCK. |

Just thread it and put a nice phantom on it. Who needs that extra length and big clunky break on the end? (Unless you want the total 74 look)

Do you have to "line up" the FSB or are the guides for the pins already there? I can't line up a square cut of wood let alone a rifle, so that's why I ask before I buy a SAR-2. |

I haven't found a SAR-2 yet, but I'm thinking a cheaper alternative would be to thread the barrel for 1/2x28RH. There are several USA made AK-74 brakes made for ARs that accept these threads. No gun smith labor required, only cost about $25 for the brake.

Make it right, get the Romanian front sight block, and the brake from CNC Warrior. Add the donkey dick foregrip, and side folding stock for the "look".

Just to pile on, have had a post-SAR2 WASR2 for awhile now, and while I haven't shot it as much as I'd like, it's been great and honestly is the nicest built and finished of the 4 "WASR" Romys I have. The Cugir folks did this one RIGHT.

In my opinion the Romy SAR series of rifles are the best of the Romys! As long as you change the trigger out with a G-2
