What I have it mind is something for me to try out to see if it can be done. I have seen the different ways people have cut down the barrel to make it work. I don't have a lathe or drill press. My idea was to take an ak74 kit and to shorten it down to about 12 inches and use an amd gas piston. Find someone to weld the gas tube/fsb together and a fake can or something to bring it to 16". I want to make it look similar to a krink. If I bring the barrel down to that length, do I need to turn down the barrel also? Do you think this combo would work? Thanks

Well, since you are not going to SBR it, what I would do is leave the bbl at 16" and just use the fake suppressor as a sleeve over it. Cutting down the bbl to 12" reduces velocity and possibly bullet stability with no up side in the configuration you propose.

Like it or not you MUST file a Form 1 and pay $200.00 tax.
Or make it a pistol.

I would think just about any old fake suppressor designed to thread over the FSB would work. If the hole in it isn't big enough for the bbl to pass through already it's pretty simple to run a drill through it.

any componet relocation will require lathe work. any machinist fresh out of vo-tech should be able to handle this, if you lay it out on print for him. check your local shop for someone that does side jobs.

Shortening the barrel will have some little impact on the bullet velocity, but the stability as with the krink, AMD65 and other short barrelled AK/M/74's should be unaffected..
As noted you will need a lathe, dill press and some building skills to relocate the gas port hole , weld up the old gas port opening and move the lower retainer and so forth. Why not go for the GB/FSB combo that restorit posted recently and install it in the original gas block location. You can add whatever furniture you want and if you chop the barrel you just blind pin or weld or silver solder the attachment to 16 inches. Moving the gas port and sight back ala AMD65 will make way more work and likely make the rifle look very front heavy and unbalanced looking IMHO. http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64348 Last edited by AKBLUE; 04-04-2010 at 05:42 PM. |

That is understandable blue, that is one of the options I was looking at. Do you know if I can fit the saiga handguard onto the ak? If so how hard is it?
