I was in Long Island this week to take care of some family matters. I figured ID break the trip home up a bit with a pilgrimage to SARCO. I called ahead of time to ask for a warehouse tour and the girl said no problem......So I get to SARCO and walked in like a little child. Id been there once before so I knew what to expect from the showroom, but I had a little chubby thinking about my upcoming showroom tour! SO I ask the front counter guy who I needed to see about the tour and he looked at me like I had 3 heads.....tells me they havnt given tours in forever due to legal reason. Well, I was like a kid who just found out that Santa's not real. Then I asked them for some MG34 feed parts and they bring out two TINY boxes of parts.....ARGHHH! They offered me a BRAND NEW bbl for 85 bucks, but I just dont need it......They were a real good bunch of guys there, very helpful, but I was major bummed that I couldnt go in back......
All I left with was a feed lever and pawl, (both do have nice dirty chickens on em). I was disappointed to say the least.... |

I built a semi '42 about 3 years ago. I put about 2K into it and she runs like a dream. Mind you shes ugly as a bitch and the welds look like playdough, but she works. There is NO mistaking a '42 on the range. Its a magnificent historical piece and a very well toleranced weapon. The 42 will run under any circumstance, as demonstrated by my garage welding and dremel skills....
The 34 is a testament to German engineering. This fukin gun wont run if there is ANY dirt or rust scale in the bolt channel. Every part has to be hand fitted and then tested against all the other parts. My 34 kit is a totally pitted POS Izzy rework, and it STILL fits tighter than any M240 that I have ever touched. When you put the receiver on the bbl shroud and rotate it under, you cant help but imagine a German soldier sitting on the Russian front...... So which do I prefer? The '42, hands down. It looks more menacing, its easier to maintain and its still in production today. It is much easier to get replacement parts and you have much more 'wiggle room' when you build one. The '34 is an amazing gun, but the '42 represents the apogee of development. Last edited by ScottD.; 07-11-2009 at 08:58 AM. |
