I have a Tapco folding stock, side rail and 3-9x scope, waiting on a UTG front handguard with rails which I was going to mount a tripod, best upgrade so far has been 20 round magazine. Do what you want with it...My sportbike is so decked out functionally that it is far from stock. Likewise with my guns...

A good scope mount on Romanian WASR series is almost a must do feature.

Lots of folks collect different muzzle devices.

A drum mag and a 20 round mag are great to have as the 20 rounder gives much better prone firing and a drum is just plain fun.

Trick it out with whatever you want.

I can change my WASR to a 'Sniper' lookalike in about 5 minutes by adding a bi-pod, installing RPK style buttstock, adding scope, 10 round mag and extended brake.
Heck, I bought an adapter and put my registered M-11 supressor on it too. Just for fun.

So it's whatever floats your boat.

I don't know about "popular", but the addition of upgraded sights of some sort and a "trigger job" are probably the two areas where improvement is needed.

The addition of a dot sight, whether a full size siderail mount or one of the miniature rear sight base models, ups the fast hit potential. A peep type rear sight is also a potential upgrade.

If you know what you are doing, hand fitting a standard Tapco or similar FCG can improve the trigger action a lot. The Red Star fully adjustable groups are pricey but top of the line.

A sidefolder stock from Ace or a factory sidefolder adds compact storage/transport to the mix. Maybe a forearm rail if you feel the need for a flashlight or grip mount. The new Hogue AK rubber grip looks interesting, I have one on my AR and will probably try one of these.

Beyond that, the AK was designed to be a stone-simple idiot-proof design that could stand up to the severe abuse a combat rifle sees in warfare. Why mess with success?

I added side folding stocks. I enjoy going out and just blasting these things - makes me feel like Rambo. haha

I prefer a stock AK. Exactly as from the factory. Learn it and learn it well. You'll find it is sufficient as is. It really needs nothing extra. Just my belief.

well i like my ak's pretty stock... so heres my list

slant brake if your rifle doenst have one already.

I like those retainer plates that get rid of the shepards hook.

tapco g2 triggers are a good thing to have if you still have a crappy old century slapper.

Then finally go get an ol' 2pt sling to you can throw that thing over your shoulder and run thru the jungle.

mmmaybe an optics rail if thats your kinda thing..

I also like mine pretty much stock. Actually took off tacticle crap when I got it.

Only thing I really liked, was replacing the standard sights with a rear Ghost ring setup, and there's a "cross hair" front sight at Midway that I really like. Improved the sight picture a lot(Ak front post was too big for my liking).

Since my AK was bought during the ban year, I made quite a few mods. Ironwood Designs stocks, tapco trigger group, and soon a phantom flash hider.

Maybe a LaRue iron dot red dot sight....we'll see

I like the 74 brake, maybe its just my imagination but I honestly think it does a good job reducing recoil and besides, if you are with friends the gas is directed in a way to make it sound like a much more wicked cartrige than it really is.

My feelings exactly. I really find a beauty in simplicity.

Buy a bunch of spare magazines and Wolf ammo, go to the range, and have some fun.

Yeah guns I see that are plain and do not address any short stock, loose mags, inaccuracy, comfort, etc. make me realize that those guns are probably seldom used compared to those who may take it out and pop off a few hundred rounds a month. In the motorcycle world we have a term for bikes that stay stock and unused - GARAGE QUEENS.

Deck your guns out gents...Make them fit, make them comfy, make them accurate. In the end it is you that has to live with it and fire it.

HAHA stock and simplicity....Please.

Do as you pleez,

But rite now, a modified AK is worthless w/o mags and ammo... And those aren't cheap... If it's SHTF material, you need 10 or more mags, 1000 rds or more, a means to pack it all, and a plan... THEN modifiy on Garth....

See, I think just the opposite. I believe that people who put every bell and whistle known to man on anything is going to look at it more than use it. Again, just my belief.

Usually other way around...On a bike you get full system and PCIII, stickier tires, aftermarket brake pads, etc. to go faster and have more control...With getting a scope on an AK and getting a longer stock you are more accurate (not bolt action accurate) but better than stock...Stock is usually the bike or gun that just gets taken out once in a while.

Go to a bike show...Same with guns. You do not buy a scope for a gun to look at it...You buy it to see your target better.

Stock means you own a garage queen.

I agree...I have four 30 round mags and two 20 round mags...I even have a 10 round mag...I will admit I like the 20s most. As for ammo, the prices are coming down and got a case of Yugo brass at a gun show as well as a case of Czech for my PSL.

1) G2 Trigger
2) replace shepherd's crook with Retaining Plate
3) New PG
4) Open up th rear sight
5) A good two point sling

Those are the standard mods any of my rifles get. I only add stuff that, in my opinion, is high quality and improves functionality.

Other items which are nice:

Ultimak rail
Aimpoint Micro T-1
XS 24/7 Front Sight

And that's about it, really.

Only mods I like for 7.62X39 are ACE sidefolder and a side rail scope mount for a Kobra red dot. This was for an AMD 65. I also replaced Pistol grips and shortened the front one to accept 30 round mags and drums. I personally don't care for scopes on a 7.62X39 AK. They don't call it the rainbow round for nothing. I have mounted a variety of scopes on an AK74 with pretty good success as the 5.45 has a much flatter trajectory.
All my milled AKs are stock all the way.

Some people go and put all this tapco and scopes and lights, lasers and all manner of plastic crap onto their ak.

They think "WoW I have one badass looking firearm"
I look at them and think "Congrats you turned a military weapon into a childs airsoft look alike"

These arnt mp5s folks, they are better. Its like the ferrari trying to pretend its a mustang. Why?

AKs dont need scopes, they are not built for them. Tacticool furniture? That laser... the bad guy can see it to. Its more off a give away than a help.
Flash light? Again the badguy will see you before you see him.

No real point to any of it IMO, you cant make it better. Want to get something you can junk up go find an AR15.
Tapco gear LOWERS the value of your AK.

AKBLUE nailed it: good magazines and ammo, that's all you need to add to your AK. Then keep it maintained properly like you would any firearm.

mags are relatively cheap and easy to find. the ammo is whats expensive, but its starting to show up again (a guy at my gunshop said it was so dry this winter because "the factories were snowed in, so they couldnt get supplies in/finished product out). If it were an ak-74 thats a little different of a story. 5.45 is plentiful and dirt cheap. The mags for them are a pain. They're tricky to find if youre new to 74's and a little more pricey. I found them for around $35-$40 on most internet sites. I got lucky and was able to pick up 4 for $25 each this weekend at the gunshow.

as for mods, i have alot of crap i really dont need on my ak, and some crap im still gonna buy for her (like a side mount scope mount instead of the receiver cover mount)

Mags, ammo, training, sling and a rig to carry your stuff.

Mags, 7-10 per rifle.
Ammo, enough to load all mags twice,3 times is better.
Training, no such thing as too much trainig.
Sling, you might need to pack that rifle for a long time,
make sure the sling is comfortable and easy to get the rifle
on target.
Rig, vest, pack whatever is easiest to get out with, and fast.

geez! Resize your freaking pictures to something that fits on a screen!

I had a number of people at the gunshow this weekend with all that crap on their guns. One guy7 couldn't understand that replacing his matching number pre-ban chinese top cover with a scope mount DECREASED the resale value of the gun. Another with an SKS was equally surprised when I told him to go home and get the original stock and he'd bump the price up a lot over that stupid advanced technology side folder.

But seriously, as far as practical modifications, if you havea crappy trigger, that should be improved. If you have to have a red dot, then replacing the gas tube with an ultimax and using an aimpoint T-1 I think is the best - also cost you $500. And keep your old parts becaue not everyone agrees.
