Default A DIY gas tube?

Is there anything 'special' about the gas tube on an AK?

I ask because I am in the process of turning a Romy G kit and laser cut flat into a Valmet/Galil/R4 clone.

I want to take the AK rear sight block completely off the rifle, but will need to replace the gas tube to do so.

My question then is if I can secure the gas tube in the rear to the receiver, other than having a tube for the piston to be in is there anything critical about the gas tube itself?

This is not an answer based on knowledge, there's my disclaimer. I would think if one were to keep the front half of the gas tube and extend it by Welding and blending an extension to the receiver it ought to work.
I'd be curious to see how your efforts come out.

Nothing special about the romy tube. Keep the inside dia. a little bigger than the piston. You'll have to bore the end to fit the gas block. This will keep the piston from hitting the gas block on it's forward travel. Not sure as to what front block you will using but there will need to bleed holes somewhere. The bleed holes are in the romy gas block. If you are going to use the galil gas block the bleed holes will need to be in the tube.

there is a flute/disk around the gas piston head of the original galil piston.you will/might have to make allowances for this to the gas block and/or piston,if you don't use a galil piston clone.not sure if you can do much to the tube, maybe some welding to extend it some.but the piston to gas block would be the concern.I take it you are trying to use all romy parts.

Yes. I'm not planning on using a Galil piston at all. All Romy parts, modify the receiver, modify the gas tube.

Just use a galil gas tube and piston. I have done several that way. It only takes slight modification to the front trunnion.

I would like to, but I cant find the gas tube. If I could, how do you mod the trunion?
