5.56mm/.223 mags for MAK-90

What mags can I use in a MAK-90 Norinco made AK import, chambered for the
5.56x45mm NATO round. I have one mag for it, a made-in-China 30 rounder.

Do the East German Weigers fit? Do the Romanian SAR-3 mags fit?

Can the 5.45mm Soviet cartridge mags be modified to fit and work?

Are there any 40 or 50 round magazines available? Are there any 5 round magazines available?

Thanks.

Any and all of those should fit.

No other mag will fit your Norinco 5.56x45mm MAK-90 rifle without being modified. Chinese mags for your rifle were imported that hold 5,10,15,or 30 rounds.

Also the 5.56 Bulgarian waffle mags will fit! Most feed and fit tight some might need a little filing but thats it!

I've heard that AK-74 mags can be modified by bending the follower. I tried it, and can get it to feed some rounds, but never got the full 30.

To modify the EG 5.45 mags, you need to dremil the feed lips and install a .223 follower (Robarm/Hesse). Some slight filing may be needed depending on the gun. I have some extra converted mags, if anyone needs some.

Original Norinco mags work the best. They are also pretty well built, but expensive. They came in 15, 30 and 40rd sizes, the 40's being pretty rare.

I've used modified Bulgarian .223 mags in mine and they ran fine. It did take a little filing on the back, but as they are plastic, it was easy.

I think pretty much any other mag will require some type of modification to work in the Norinco.

Thanks for the replies. I have a longish red/brown 5.45mm mag that I can try to modify. Are these 40 round mags? Will they hold more of the skinnier 5.56mm NATO rounds?

I wouldn't touch it. It is a fairly expensive mag. Try loading it. The taper on the cases of 5.45 and 5.56 is different. It won't work properly loaded with 5.56 ammo. Once you take a file to it it becomes worthless.

Yes, but they need to be modified. I needed to grind on top the front of the mag and the bottom of the mag catch to get the right angle for reliable use. I can take some pictures if you want to see.

It sounds like the Bulgarian waffle mags require less work.

Sgt_Gold,

Yes, I am interested in seeing the modifications in pics. When you have the time, I would appreciate it.

The AK-74 mag that I have, will fit into the mag well with no problem. It will not feed in its present unmodified state. I can see where the 5.56mm round hits the inside portion of the mag. The "bump" appears to be the red plastic.

I don't have any Bulgy waffle mags.

Thanks,

The drum you posted the link to is a Chinese AK drum for 7.62x39. I passed on one in perfect condition last weekend for $125 labeled. (I don't know whether he would have come down or not.)

Packrat did you go all the way to the bottom photo in the link. It shows a 7.62 round not fitting very well. The one I bought is an exact copy of the one on the link and 7.62 x 39 rounds wont fit. The mag I have holds 6 rounds of 223 in 11 of the 13 bays and 4 rounds in each of the other 2 around the mag. + 11 rounds in the single round bays in the webs(2 of the webs dont have single round bays)+ 4 in the feed tower for a total of 89 rounds, I guess they were counting the round in the chamber or I need more practice loading. I believe the 7.62 drum only has 11 multiple round bays and 9 single round bays. I should have a 7.62 drum showing up this week I,ll take some side by side pics for comparison. By the way I,ve looked the drum over and there are no markings of any kind.

Robert

You're right; I saw what I expected, and didn't read the text. It's too bad that more of these weren't imported.

5 round mags can be found (I have two of them right now). I think cdnn has the 15 rounders.

RPB sells some 5.45 conversion mags that someone had started to convert (forget who, now) and the ATF told them to stop. These modifications were intended to make them useable for 5.56 caliber. You can get them for cheap... around $5 or so.

I ordered a few, but have yet to try them. You'll probably still need to get the robarm followers. I posted pics of them here:
