I haven't tried the Kalinka scope but I have tried the Freedom Optics scope and for a Gen.I it's not bad: uses AA batteries (including rechargeables), reticle is a nice high-contrast red on the green NV background, controls are easy/intuitive to use (off, on, on w/IR). I'd deal w/FO before Kalinka (I've done business w/Yuri at FO, he's good people but have heard too many bad things about Kalinka). My budget being what it is I just settled on a PK-AS sight & a Znich tactical light for the AK-74 (see my recent post). HTH...

Depends upon ambient lighting conditions & visibility (contrast) of the target. A high-contrast target can be spotted/ID'd further out than a low-contrast (camo'd) target. The FO scope comes w/a supplemental IR illuminator for use in pitch black or very low ambient light conditions. I didn't have the opportunity to test it extensively but w/the IR illuminator or good ambient light I'd estimate usable shooting range to be appx 100-200yds. Problem at longer ranges is the inherent poor picture quality of all Gen.1 scopes. You might be able to *see* at longer ranges but poor picture quality can prevent you from getting any useful info about what you're looking at.
