Default The International Brotherhood of Firearm Restorers and Builders

The thread about the LEO who was killed by an ALLEDGED BUILDER of firearms:

http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38813

has caused me to do a little thinking this morning.

Not wanting to appear to use the cirumstances of this Officer's untimely death for ANY PURPOSES WHATSOEVER...I figured it would be best to start this thread over here and not hijack that thread.

As BUILDER and RESTORERS of firearms...have you noticed that NOBODY speaks for us as a group?

When some wack job goes off and kills somebody...or when some politico figures he's found an easy target to get more anti-gun votes...or if the LIBERAL MEDIA EVER finds out what we're doing...and sees a chance to sell a couple more news papers...or maybe a couple one-hour "news" specials...

they can ALL come after US builders...

and we don't have NOBODY that will say a DAMN thing in our defense.

There is NO manufacturers group, no business organization, no pseudo-quasi government organization...NOBODY will stand up when the anti's figure its time to shut down our hobby.

The NRA? No way Ray. GOA...maybe, but just maybe.

Damn...even guys that like to have sex with little kids have a group that states an official position...

There is strength in numbers...if you can go to a newspaper with a "offical" press release..."AS a response to the untimely death of Officer So and So...The IBFRB would like to again state its position that its members are blab-blab-blab you know the rest."

If you can back up that press release with maybe 100,000 or so members...people that VOTE...and call their congress critter to remind him of that...

...maybe...just maybe they won't screw with us.

It don't have to be much...pretty much a statement of beliefs, a published guideline for safe building and operating of firearms...maybe a website and an offical looking logo.

AT least we could get out in front of a shit storm...maybe before one starts...

Back in the 60's when I was building and flying model airplanes...I remember all the shit we used to take about that...noise issues...safety "concerns" that people had...most of it was over the noise issue and the idea that model aircraft uses a lot of space at public parks...

I always thought that the truth behind the complaints...was them complainers just wanted us to go away....just...go away!

The AMA and AMA sanctioned clubs kept the hobby from getting TOTALLY outlawed any number of times.

I'm sure SOME "professional" gunsmiths and vendors out there would probably HATE the idea of giving the home 'smith ANY ligitimacy and would jealously fight it tooth and nail...some would...some wouldn't...I wouldn't count on a lot of support from them...but it sure would be welcome.

I wonder about "Big" guys like SARCO or Numrich?

Anyways...any ideas?

great Idea Chief......cept what this faternity has always been about was guys flying well below the radar,,,hell even minnimums for that matter.....be it the potential for future government intrusion in their priate lives, the advertising ownership of articles that are easy theft targets, living with the basic reaction of Fear by the general PC public,,, etc etc I'm afraid the firearm bretheran like to be sliding along in the dark, unnoticed, unharrassed.

But boy Sir,,,, you sure do know how to write good political copy As to the untimely death.... well said...... Obama's gonna be needing some right wing, gun toting sympothetic copy writers for his campaign if he wants to get the small minded gun toting, bible clutching white guys to vote for him.........want me put in a good word for ya????

Sliding below the radar is another word for fearful. Guys use the same excuse
for not belonging to the NRA. I'ld rather them just say they are to cheap to care.
And look at the other murders in the news today, a woman ran over her boyfriend a few times and the drunk in the photo that hit those bicycle racers
on Foxes website. Doesn't make cars or booze killers in most peoples minds.
And that is the message that gun owners need to pound the public with. You can
only do it through a group.

Chief, you are right on target with this one. The sickos who have sex with kids get better press than we are going to get.

Anyone who hasn't clicked on the link above and gone to the thread in the "News and Current Events" needs to read that now. I fear we are about to get hammered. This incident is a beautiful gift-wrapped-and-tied-with-a-pretty-bow present to the Schumers, Feinsteins, and Kennedys in our Congress. As a relatively minor group in the larger sphere of firearms owners and shooters, we may have suddenly arrived on the anti-gun radar of the media and assorted gun-ban groups.

I don't have any idea which is the best course. Unite? Stand publicly for the essential saneness and decency of all but a tiny fraction in our craft?

Or go underground? We all know what likely happens to the underground right-wing especially when there are firearms involved. Gordon Kahl, Randy Weaver, Waco, the polygamist group in Texas... Demonize them, raid them, kill them, burn them out.

[Disclaimer: I am NOT standing up for any of the aforementioned groups or individuals or causes, but just using them as examples.]

Its just something to think about...

As a former resident of New Jerky...I remember the NRA's responce to New Jersey's gun bans...

"Its the Law...you gotta obey it."

...and that's true...you MUST obey the law. I just wish the NRA would have been a bit more "out in front" helping out New Jersey gun owners"...

BTW...I've been an NRA member since the first I owned guns!

But I do fear that they will do NOTHING to help ... we few...if it came to a fight.

WE got exactly NOBODY on our side...

It would be interesting to see if Jen and the other Building Web site Owners could get together and maybe help organize...something...

Like I said...individually...we ain't nothing....but collectively...In union there is strength...

I'm thinking its a good idea to get out in front of the "anti's" BEFORE there's trouble.

I don't think the NRA would be much help--they are trying to stay close enough to mainstream to prevent getting labeled extremist again.

Remember a huge number of gun owners--hunters and target shooters alike--don't think the EBR fringe should have those mil-type semi-autos. Building is even more fringe in the minds of a lot of ordinary gun owners.

I believe in the ability of the NRA to motivate masses of gun owners to lobby government and stall the tide towards banning everything. But it seems to me like the NRA and the masses would prefer throwing us to the wolves if it helps keep the "safe" or "sporting" type stuff. This despite the large amount of favorable attention paid in the NRA publications to military style semis. I would bet they fall back to a "sacrifice the extremist" type position rather than hold to an all-or-nothing position, if push comes to shove.

I don't think there are enough of us to get out in front of the media or the gunbanners, except in the sense of putting ourselves out as targets. Easy cheap targets at that.

btw, I am an NRA Life Member, and mostly am glad they are doing the job they do.

I think it's a good idea Chief.

I think it was Franklin that said, "If we don't hang together, we will surely hang apart."

But boy, CHIEF...you sure do know how to write good political copy

Ya' LIKE good copy???? Hell...I'm just a stooge...y'all just wait until somebody with Press Creds gets ahold of this...One day you're gonna read...

"XYZ news has just uncovered a HUGE HOLE in the government’s effort to keep reasonable and sensible controls on ownership of firearms. Who can legally and safely own them and who can sell them has ALWAYS been at the heart of government efforts to get along with gun owners.

But recently a young heroic POLICE OFFICER was GUNNED DOWN by a man who could NOT legally own firearms…so he found a way around the law by using a little know loophole in our laws…

He built the firearm used to kill this young father of two…right in his own home.

NRA officials contacted today could only say their membership is bound to follow ALL of our countries gun control law.

Senators blab blab and blab stood on the capital steps today and held a news conference detailing efforts they are drawing up to end this assault gun madness…"

There's a pulitzer prize just waiting for a young go-getter in here...and maybe a Senate seat...

I fear one day...after people (the press and and etc) find out that you can actually BUILD AND REPAIR FIREARMS...with out ANY GOVENMENT KNOWLEDGE OR SUPERVISION...

One day, we might have to go through a 30 day waiting period and a NICS check...just to buy a bottle of Hoppes #9 ... let alone a Romy Kit.

I know I beat this horse a couple of times before...

Their epitaph read: Building guns was RIGHT they didn’t know they had…until it was taken away from them.

This is all bad news. Seems to be accelerating in the wrong direction especially for us who have an enjoyment for homebuilding, and are responsible law-abiding owners

Does anyone know for a fact if this misguided character (shooter) had a screen name on the boards?

I was expecting a happier-than-usual day, anticipating hitlery's concession this evening, but this Tuscon shooting has negated that

Steve

PS Ted thanks for the book CWII. Very informative read.
