that is the thick width cap as opposed to the thin ones correct?

No it is the standard width. I have seen a couple thicker ones, one being on my Yugo pistol grip which is VERY wide and the other being for the wide Chinese type grip. These are European, either Polish or Russian I'm not sure, but they will fit my type 3 laminated grip perfectly.
