Default Gun Pawn SSR-85c-2 is a Tank!

So I go into this Gun Shop and see this SSR and end up trading 2 run of the mill Mosins, a can of 54R and $200 cash.

Not too bad since the mosins were bought in the stone age and taking up room.

Anyways, I got another one of these and have to say they are built very nice. I dont care for the plum furniture but oh well that can change maybe. The original owner never even took it to range.

Magwell is super tight too, a bit too much actually.

Receiver is 1.6

What was the price tag on it ?

Price was $599 but negotionable. I chanced it and came back next day with the mosin deal because they were closing anyway. The guy had no idea and lucky for me people around here dont care much for the AK. Bad thing for me is the selection sucks.

The SSR-85c is one of the best Bulgarian stamped AK's made! Enjoy!
PS-Don't worry about the tight magwell, just try different mags until you find ones that fit good, and polish the sharp edges of the mag well with a Dremel buffing wheel.

Dang it - playing on whats his face - that comedian Paul Rodriguez - "Why do the dorks always get the cherry guns?"

Kidding! Sounds exotic and looks moreso - now this curiosity will only grow. I forsee an obsession leading to me spending more damn money.

THANKS "MULLETCQB"

They dont come around often. Its Bulgarian made and the receiver I would say is as good as they come. Id have to weigh it but it feels as heavy as one of my Galils.

$650-850 is a fair range, if you can find one.

Yes, I have an Arsenal box. Broke it down and am storing it flat. Even new it didn't look as good as this Arsenal USA box.

Some of these have no identifiers on the front trunnion. Can someone explain?

And if the front trunnion is USA made, is it properly made/proper steel/heat treated?

Its a Bulgarian trunnion on mine, here is a pic of a restamped trunnion to match the rest of the Milled kit they used. Also here is a pic of the barrel numbers.

Im quite happy with this rifle. The workmanship is hands down some of the best Ive seen.

Looks like the stamping is shallow? Like the trunnion has been shaved? I see yours has the heavy, 1.6 "RPK" receiver version.

Looking around, I found the info. And probably why the AUSA Polish underfolders have no ID still on the front trunnion. (front trunnions are probly Polish, and are not made in US)

"I visited their shop when I lived in Houston - Global made both 1.6mm and 1.0mm receivers. They were really good at the time. I build several AKs from them and have been happy with everyone. My understanding was the 1.6mm was for "RPKs"."

"they are 1.6mm receivers, trunnions need to be milled down to fit, back in the day they were the heavy duty stamped receiver"

"Before the No Dak Spud receivers about all that was available were the Ohio Ordnance spot hardened receivers and the Arsenal USA/Global Trades receivers.
The Arsenal was the only one that was fully hardened back then and was at the time the best receiver on the market."

"I agree.. For what its worth, I have an all matching #'s 1984 Polish underfolder with an armory USA Houston TX receiver (with target logo) and I have not had any issues with over 5,000 rounds."

"Since Arsenal USA shaved the trunions to fit the 1.6mm receiver there are no markings on the front trunion. I'm considering having Soviet markings engraved before I refinish it."

Found a few references to peeling chrome in chambers (Bulgy) and improperly heat treatment, pretty sure those were Globals.

And quite a few Nodak or Childers, or die, posts. Lol

For what it's worth, my search had to do with "SSR-AKMS Polish underfolder". Apparently these were a small run, with a parked finish.

The OP rifle is one of the SSR-85's, equipped with chicom barrel stuffs.
When looking around the internet, Mr Nailoth shows up fairly often giving the rundown on the various SSR-85's.

The rough and tumble early internet and first US builders is fun stuff to read.

Yeah I get it. Thought about that and also thought I didnt have shit in the Mosins and can either (about $250).

I could have jacked around doing that and let some Bubba buy the SSR.

I guess I just screwed myself

Your right I read that too. That GB rifle is different than the 2 I own and the muzzle isnt threaded either. Not that it makes a difference but the 2 I have are near identical and are built very well.

I sent the seller a email.

It's a hodgepodge AK. They are cool, but I wouldn't call them the "best" AK from Bulgaria. However, in the $500-$600 range, they are tough to beat.

Well that GB one might be. The one I just got is really nice in every way. Beats the shit out of any Arsenal Ive came across as far as a stamped build. Its no way a "hodgepodge".

Just kinda depends on who built it.

Also I never heard back from the GB seller so its anybodys guess who built it.

The one on GB is the 1.6mm receiver, it looks just like an SSR-85c I used to have many years ago.

Sorry, beat you to it, it's a TGI, but very well assembled! Bulgarian parts, USA receiver, USA stock set, USA trigger group. Can't beat it for $650!
