HANOI, Vietnam - A Vietnamese court sentenced 12 people to death for heroin trafficking on Friday, bringing to 27 the number of people sent to death row on drug charges this week, according to court officials and media reports.
The twelve were among 29 people convicted by the Quang Ninh People's Court of participating in a drug ring that trafficked heroin from Vietnam to China, said Tran Dao, a court official. The court sentenced eight others to life in prison, and nine more received prison terms of 16 to 20 years. The group trafficked some 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of heroin to China between 2003 and 2006, Dao said. On Thursday, a court in Hanoi sentenced 11 people to death and a court in the central province of Nghe An sentenced 4 others to death, all for heroin trafficking, Vietnam News Agency reported. Vietnam's drug laws are among the toughest in the world. Possession, trade or trafficking of more than 600 grams (1.3 pounds) of heroin or 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of opium is punishable by life in prison or death. About 100 people are put to death by firing squad each year for drug-related offenses.
