Has anyone seen the $299 gun safe they are selling at harbor freight? I downloaded the product manual and it stated that it was not compliant with CA doj regulations for a suitable gun safe.
What the heck does that mean? It looks like a crappy safe and I'm sure that someone could bust off the lock and open it with a pair of needle nose pliers. I was thinking of welding or bolting some heavy duty lock hasps on it and using a couple of shrouded locks to beef up security. I've got too many guns now and need a cheap safe that works. How do you protect your guns from ner' do wells? |

Buy the best safe you can afford. Not the cheapest one you can find.
You can't afford to not have a safe. |

ya'd be better off to put a couple hundred bucks with that $300 go to Wally world and get the 640lb AMERICAN MADE Winchester safe they sell for $500 and change they are digital and a locksmith buddy showed me a neat demo of one.... he is onea the top safe crackers in AZ well the cops ue him all the time to open safes etc... he gets out to this job and its a drug house with 4 of these Winchester safes in one room...... no cracking it by picking the tumbler cause there are none, with the digital keypad ya can do nothing with it unless ya got the combo well......... took him 30 minutes to cut through the door on each one to access the solendoid and unlock each with a carbide hole saw with a tumbler dial type safe he's in there in under a minute, ya can hear the cops talkin crap in the background Keith just looks off camera at one and points at the mag drill and tells him "step up son this son of a bitch ain't light" the cop comes on camera and just as he puts his hand on the drills handle keith unplugs the power to the electro magnet......... boom barelly misses the cops foot with the 150 lb drill he just looks at him innocent as can be an says ohh I'm so sorry was that your toe son? nobody did any heckling after that
he told me he hates havin to deal with the digital safes cause the ones made in America the companies won't even release the override codes to locksmiths only the store ya bought it through can call and provide a code to get the override for that particular safe based on serial number...... They aren't the highest end ya can get but they beat the hell outa the sheet metal junk I use one as a decoy safe in the main house all it has in it are a couple .22s and stuff we don't want the kids gettin into etc... but it'll keep a crook occupied for quite awhile hopefully keepin em from looking around too much etc... |

Check the internet. There are a lot of people either moving or bought a house with a safe that is going to cost them money to remove. Often they will give away the safe just for getting it out of the house.

A lot of local safe dealers have the safe moving equipment and sell used safes that they have removed from houses.

Whatever safe you buy, bolt it to the wall & floor, preferably in a closet where there isn't room to get leverage on a pry bar. If it can be tipped over, then even a half decent safe can be pried open.

Buy a safe that is 3 TIMES as big as you THINK you need. If you buy the safe you think you need you will need another one later.

Bolting to the wall or floor greatly increases any safes effectiveness. Your average common burgler isn't going to waste time with a gun safe. They are grab and run types. One of your BUDS that knows what is in the safe will come with a power saw and head straight for the safe. Any safe that has a dedicated attacker is going to get opened. |

Ive kinda got the same situation. I was looking at the remington 24 gun digi, but while I can swing the cost, I cant fit it through the door of my apartment. And I think even if it fits it will be impossible to move in. I was thinking about the Stack-on 10 gun with the side locker with shelves, that way I could weight it down with all my ammo and jigs and stuff. I cant bolt it to the floors or walls cause its not my place, Im renting, but if I weight it down itll at least be a bitch for anyone to move, and anyone trying to pry it open will probly make enough noise to alert my neighbor/ land lord who is like 10 feet from my only door and home all day everyday. My only issue with it is itll be full now. I was thinking getting that and bolting a 14 gun locker to the side to further hinder any moving of the locker. I figure if someone comes in to rob me and they really want my stuff, unless Im here, theyre gonna get it. All I can do is tryn slow them down some.

Yea thats the one. It looks pretty sturdy. I figured that if I bolt some good hasps and use a shrouded lock it would be better than the walmart gun locker I have now. I'm limited on room and I live in an upstairs apartment so I'd rather have a few 10 gun safes than 1 30 gun safe. I was also thinking about a "gang box". Thats a tool box used on construction sites to keep people from stealing the tools. It looks safer than any gun cabinet and I could put the locker in the gang box have it double locked.
But what about hiding your guns? I thought about getting an old water heater and gutting it out to hide some rifles. I could even connect some dummy lines into the walls. where would you hide your guns if you were going away for the weekend? |

Seriously, nowhere is a good place to hide a gun. They will find it. The only place I would hide it if I had to would be: 1. In the tank of a toilet. 2. In the refrigerator/freezer. 3. Behind a refrigerator or stove. 4. Bang out a wall. Hide gun in wall. Fix wall. 5. Ductwork. The water heater idea is pretty good. Although if the robber see's water heaters, he/she might know something is up and check it out. I realize my options are not good for a gun. They are the only safe ideas in my opinion.

I looked at them pretty closelu before I bought mine. I would pass unless you just need something to keep the kids away from your firearms. Add $100-$150 to it and find a decent used one. I bought a 60 x 36 scratch and dent for $500 here in Houston.

Do A Search On Jewler's Safes For Sale. There are Bargins to be had in today's economy. A BIG Jewlers safe is built many times stronger than any Gun Safe. And can be found at great prices if your willing to arrange transport.
