Salt is what's in the bore after firing corrosive ammo. Potassium chloride, an edible but bitter brother to table salt.

The same thing that dissolves table salt dissolves potassium chloride. Water. Anything with water works. Hot is good, the heat helps dry the barrel.

1. I run 4 or 5 patches soaked in Ammonia 50%/Water 50% through the bore.
Then dry patches until the bore is dry.

2. Then I run 3-4 patches soaked in Hoppes #9. Brush out. Run 3-4 patches soaked in Hoppes #9 again. Then run 3-4 dry patches through then bore. I repeat this cycle 4 or 5 times.

3. Repeat #1 once after finished with #2.

4. Soak a paper towel in Ammonia 50%/Water 50% and thoroughly clean and dry the bolt.

5. Use patches or paper towels soaked in Ammonia 50%/Water 50% to clean and dry any metal that may have been exposed to the corrosive salts.

6. Oil bolt and put away until the next range visit.

I don't know if the ammonia "neutralizes" the salts as I believe or just "dissolves" and washes them away as has been mentioned on this forum. That's a moot point. The main thing is the ammonia/water solution works. We have never had ANY corrosion following the above cleaning schedule.

I put my bolt, gas piston, and recoil spring on the top rack of the dishwasher for starters.

Sorry, in my post I was refering to a Mosin bolt. In fact, I had Mosin bolt action rifles in my head when I wrote the post since we use corrosive military surplus ammo when shooting them.

I have heard of some guys using Windex w/ammonia and also Sweets 762 for cleaning. I am interested also as I have a new PSL I want to take care of after shooting 7N1.

I used to use windex, but a gallon of ammonia costs a buck and a half. Mix it with a gallon of water and you have enough cleaner for a couple of years of active shooting and cleaning.
