I'd be real leery of any Freedom Group stuff, as they seem to want to ruin anything they touch, but the Ruger and S&W are solid.

I wish more companies would get into the midlength game instead of all of these carbine styles.

Great buys. Paid 600 for my Ruger AR556 couple weeks ago. Can't go wrong with either Ruger or SW.

Midlength has a longer gas system & longer handguard to cover it.

Allegedly

Midlength is better for 16" barrel systems
Carbine is better for 14.5" barrel systems.

Carbine with a 16" barrel

Mid Length with a 16" barrel.

I'm not the resident AR guru by any means, but I just built a better rifle then those for the same price.

$219 PSA MOE upper Stainless 416R match grade midlength (+$18 shipping)
$104 Blitzkrieg Tactical Nickel Boron BCG (+$8 Shipping)
$25 Blitzkrieg Mod3 charging handle
$65 R-Guns nickel boron LPK with FCG (+tax)
$7 upgrade fee for the contoured grip
$32 R-Guns Mil-spec buffer tube kit
$40 Magpul stock (Local Cabelas)
$40 Anderson stripped lower (+$13 FFL Fee)

Those basic M4 handguards and cheap plastic M4 stocks suck.
I'm a heavy modification whore on my classic cars, so I know the loss of $$ buying and rebuying.
Buy once , cry once, do it right the 1st time.
Just my .02

Like was mentioned, a carbine and midlength both have 16" barrels, assuming non-SBR rifles.

The advantage to the midlength, is a softer recoil impulse, a longer hand guard, a longer sight radius and you can put a standard bayonet on a midlength (if you're into that sort of thing). I also happen to think less barrel sticking out past the handguard looks better too. The 16" carbine, especially with the M4 barrel profile was supposed to look more like the military M4, but the dimensions are wrong by 1.5", so it's just looks over substance.

For the record, I have a carbine, a midlength and a 7.5" pistol. Shooting the carbine (while utterly reliable) back to back with the midlength you can tell a difference.

The angle of the pic makes the carbine, on the top, look shorter than the mid on the bottom, but it isn't. They are the same length.

In case anyone is wondering, there is also the "dissipator" and those are a 20" gas system on a 16", but honestly, I think those look kind of dumb. This is not mine.

I don't personally think the above AR looks "Dumb" .....it's just nostalgic.

With a half a century of the AR being the US Military's primary small arm, it's got alot of variations.
Pretty cool stuff IMO. There's alot of goofyness in the $$$'s of aftermarket rifle producers though too.

I think your Carbine stock being collapsed all the way has more to do with it.

Nice collection.

The A2 upper is fine, it's the dissipator gas system that looks dumb. Granted, the military never used a midlength either, but they don't have to because they use a 14.5" barrel, but a midlength makes some sense. I have no idea who came up with the dissipator, but it makes less sense to me.

Im no fan of the looks of the 'Dissipator' either.
I own a Colt A2 20' H-Bar (first AR i ever bought) and too many M4 type ARs.
Now i want a mid to add to the collection.
Looking at the mid i like it cas i could mount my 512 and 3x mag alittle further forward.

Thanks. I've changed things up just a bit since that pic was taken. The midlength got a CTR stock instead of the MOE, the pistol grip was changed from a MOE, to a BCM Mod 3 (great, cheap grip if you like shorter stocks and shoot my squared up as it has less angle. The other two have BCM Mod 1's, those cost more and aren't quite as good). The pistol is getting a new free floating handguard and adjustable gas block. The carbine doesn't have the light mount any more.

My dissapator is one of my favorite rifles. It's a mid length gas though. I even got a baby dissipator too that's a carbine length gas.

Yeah, as soon as I re-read my post, I remembered the dissipator has a 20" front sight (which isn't actually the gas block), but an actual midlength gas system. That shorty looks fucking bad ass, so I have to eat my words a bit.

If I remember correctly the original dissapator was a rifle length gas system. It was just a cut down 20" rifle but they weren't always reliable. Then someone, I think Bushmaster, came out with the mid length dissapator. PSA calls theirs a mock dissapator.

Thank you for taking the picture. Ive been thinking of changing up the furniture on some of my M4s as they all have the same style quad rails.

If you aren't a rail "snob", this one is a decent price at about $72 shipped if you use their discount code. I bought one for my pistol to get rid of the bulky quad rail it came with. It's a free floater, and that may not be what you're looking for.

I had an issue with the rail when I received it, but they jumped right on it, so I'll give them a free pass this once.

Some people need the latest & greatest so good deals can be had on last year's models.
My election year black gun buy was a POF P 415 / 3rd generation. Damn nice rifles.
Added MI back up sights and my Elcan specter DR. I need to swap the buttstock and add a sling.

I bought a mid length gas system rifle and like the softer recoil impulse. I see the virtue of the dissapator type gun.

Carbines work fine, but mid-lengths are nicer all the way around for 14.5-16" rifles.

On topic; It's 2016, there's no excuse to buy Bushmaster, the Ruger is probably okay, but the M&P Sport has the track record for budget performance.

What i do not like about the expanse is that its minus the dust cover, forward assist and rear sight.

Anything/any reason perticular to watch out for?
My Bushmaster XM15(preban) has not given me any issues.
I bought that rifle back in 1996.

You should be fine, yours was made long before Bushmaster was bought by the Freedom Group. They fuck up everything they touch, like the more current Remington Express shotguns. Before they bought them, Remington's were always good to go. These days, not so much.

You can get a lot better deals from PSA, when you buy complete uppers or complete rifle kits. I bought my mid-length rifle kit from them for $399 shipped during Labor Day. That was everything but the stripped lower. It even came with Mapul furniture. I just added an Anderson lower I had previously paid $40 for, and had a complete rifle for $440.
