This may be the wrong place to post this, being an AK forum and all, but, I've been thinking about buying an all-around super-accurate semi-auto or bolt action rifle, preferably in .308.
I'm becoming more and more interested in hiking and hunting and less interested in assault rifles, but I'm not too familiar with bolt action rifles. All I know is I want something accurate, light, and robust. I lean toward a Mauser controlled-feed action, but I'll consider others. I understand the Remington model 700 and Savage model 110 series are both accurate rifles, especially in their heavier barrelled versions. I've also heard that any rifle equipped with the BOSS system can be made accurate with just about any ammo. Any suggestions? I don't mind spending most of a Grand for a good all-around rifle, but I'm hesitant to spend more than about $1,500 for an Armalite AR-10. Is that rifle even worth it? I'd like my new rifle to be capable of at least MOA without having to be virtually rebuilt by a gunsmith and yet not break the bank. What do you guys have experience with? Am I asking too much?

I highly reccomend the Savage bolt actions with the Accutrigger. I bought my first Savage last year, a .300 Ultra Mag. It shoots between .50-.75MOA out of the box!!! I recently purchased my second Savage, a laminated stainless in .270 WSM which I haven't shot yet. I'm sure I will own at least another before I die. The Remingtons have been hit or miss for a few years now. I've been reading a lot of horror stories about shoddy workmanship and poor quality on other boards. The Savages are a bargain.

Yeah, back in the '90's, I had a Remington 700 that probably came from the factory with excess headspace. I say "probably" because I bought it second-hand and there is always the possibility of the former owner monkeying with it. I only mention it because I heard several stories about excess headspace on Remingtons, and one was from an article in a major gun magazine.
Thanks for reminding me! And thanks for the info on Savage; I had always heard they are accurate out of the box, but it's good to hear from an end-user!

Here's one of the groups I shot with my savage .300 RUM a few weeks ago. That was the last time I had it to the range. That's a 150 gr Sierra at almost 3400 fps!!!

I think that wal-mart will special order for you if you talk to the sporting goods manger. They have a book that lists all the models they can get.
