AKOU Cast Trunnions challenge
Because of all controversy about cast trunnions in your rifles, I have a simple challenge for all of you to prove to all of us, that you are ready to stand behind your product. No more speculations about cast trunnions strength versus forged trunnions strength. There is time for arguing and there is time for action. Arguing is over.
Challenge rules:
Donate 1 rifle for testing + 50000 rounds
Over next 12 months, we will test your rifle in all different weather environments: from cold winters to extremely hot summers.
We will post videos and pictures updates every month from test progression.
Test will consists of shooting 4166 rounds per month in semi-automatic fire rate. Barrel temperature will be controlled with Fluke Laser thermometer to prevent barrel overheating.
Every 90 rds, rifle will dropped to concrete 2 times, from waist height: 1 time on left side and 1 time on right side.
Manufacturer of the rifle will be responsible for providing all spare parts, like springs, bolts, bolt carriers and so on, as necessary.
We will not test accuracy of the barrel, unless requested by manufacturer. We are focusing on trunnions strength only, but if desired by manufacturer, we can report on accuracy as well.
If you are ready to accept this challenge and prove that, you believe in your product, please comment underneath of this post, then message me or email me at: ak74ski@comcast.net

Thank you very much. We really need an informative video by a well known persona in the AK world to educate the newbies about the dangers of the IO rifles. Everything out there right now is either all propaganda or virtually unknown.

I wonder if any of those companies have the balls to actually take up that challenge. Although I expect the 50,000 rounds of ammo to be the really big stumbling block.

50k rds for is nothing for those companies, compared to possible marketing success they can get from it (if their rifle will survive). Just saying.

That's only $10,000 worth of ammo. I expect them all to jump on this...

That is true, any rifle that can survive your tests is a real winner.

Aren't you concerned that they will slip a ringer in?
You know an AK built just to pass your tests but not be the same as what the rest of us would get if we bought one?

Many companies would do this. I think that is the concern that some people have when a rifle is provided by the company that makes it.

Also just want to say that the AKOU shirt I got is awesome! Lots of compliments when I wear it. People stop and ask me where I got it, so I tell them!

Rob,
Thanks for offering to do this! That would be awesome!
If they do not accept the challenge, that says something about what the manufacturers think of their product too.

Does anyone really think IO would send Rob any of their AK's? They'd probably get broken during shipping in a foam box!

Century for example is importing ammo, their cost is much much smaller than this...;-)

Love your videos Rob.

A better and more scientific approach would be to ask for three rifles each and run 10-15K rounds through them.

Having one break/fail could happen on any rifle - even the high-end models. So what if one breaks? It doesn't tell you much. Replication is a must in any scientific testing. You also need a controls (same number) - high end - milspec, combloc unissued parts would be an acceptable comparison.

I see the push for high round count testing. The truth is... these are low-end AKM knockoffs. 99.5% of shooters will never put 15,000 rounds through one rifle. Too expensive and most consumers are simply too busy to have the time to do this. The guys that do a ton of shooting and are "operators" should buy better stuff anyway.

I have many akms. Some good, some cheap. I bought the PSA kit - I am bummed about the cast trunnions. I'll shoot it to get my money's worth. As long as it doesn't blow up in my face . Its not a 50,000 round rifle and I didn't buy it as such. Maybe the should call these AKTs (AK Types) instead of AKMs instead? They have to earn it (AKM) as you say Rob.

I still want to know what video he says.

"Do you need a hug or something, you need the cleaning rod."

That would make a good ring tone, or combine them all together.

I used to have an audio program that could rip those out of a video but
I didn't update it and it's now unusable, so I can't do it.

You know none of them are going to agree to that.

You should just show up to their office and film the challenge instead. Then we can watch it on youtube when they decline and their face turns red.

Springfield has been using cast receivers for their M1A rifles for a long time now and I can't ever remember of hearing about a reciever failure. I think it could work with an AK trunnion, if its done right, but there will always be the stigma that cast=junk. People are already bitching that the US made AKs cost to much, a milled trunnion would even further increase the price.

I love the idea, but I doubt the lawyers and corporate types will allow it.

Too much risk, what if...., but...

No disrespect to Rob intended but if I were running a company and some guy showed up uninvited with an open challenge I wouldn't feel obligayed to give him the time of day.

I'd probably be thinking something like "Get this Michael Moore wannabe out of my office."

Throw in the possibility of a ringer as someone mentioned earlier and there will be doubts and naysayers before the test is complete.

That said-how about crowd sourcing? I'd kick in a little.

Buy the rifles out of dealer stock so there is no monkey business, and see if an ammo distributor or manufacturer will help out with a discount or donation.

I hope you find a way to do this, and thank you for your informative and entertaining videos.

Really? Are you sure? I think you may be wrong.
I'll post 2 links to a SA M1a catastrophic failure. I'll admit this is extreme, but this is something that people can expect shooting military style rifles and surplus ball or cheap made ammo. Let's face it we don't always buy the best stuff for shooting and accidents happen. It's not always about service life, safety is big part too.

"Hey guys give us your rifle for a year and over $11,000 worth of ammo so we can shoot it for a year with plenty of spare parts on your dime".

Dumbest fucking thing I've heard all day.

Better to just give a full auto version to Battlefield: Vegas for a year. They'll put more stress on it than Rob Ski ever could and they don't need free ammo to do it.

Not at all.

It's a cool idea that a company that is regularly bashed by AK owners would give someone a free rifle or a year and $11,000 of ammo and free spare parts for testing, but lets think about it for a second. Why would a company throw out that sort of money with zero incentive? I could understand maybe a rifle and a couple thousand, but 50000 rounds gets expensive. You know how much $$ that would cost in shipping? A fuck ton.

You don't see Rob begging for free shit from anyone else. Why not just ask for the rifle and put it through a few classes like they did with the DDI?

You wouldn't go into a restaurant and demand their most expensive meals for a week for free. This is like the Yelp! episode of South Park.

Or better yet, how about Rob gives out free training for a year and we'll see how it is?

Probably because that wouldn't answer the question being asked. Which is if cast trunnions can last as long as forged. Or at least come close after a high round count. Will they take him up on it? Probably not but think if say PSA did and no one else did. If their trunnion survived they might make a killing in sales because they showed they had nothing to hide. Then again it could fail and I'm sure none of them would want that advertised. Or if it lives and only they participated then the others might piggy back on their success and claim all cast trunnions are up to par...so I can see reasons why they would and wouldn’t want to take the offer.
