Default The MANY uses of an AK cleaning kit and rod

Lately it seems there have been a lot of threads asking things like: "This is stuck how do i fix it?" "Is there a tool for this" "How do you guys do this?", etc... as well as the cleaning rod thread. In this thread I wish to share just a few of the many uses of the AK cleaning kit and rod that I have picked up over the years. Some of them are by design, some of them are the result of improvising in the field without proper tools. This thread is not complete, these are just some of the uses that I have discovered. If you have other uses, please share them.

In no particular order:

Cleaning rod properly stowed under barrel.

What's inside that trap door?

Some sort of pod...

Let's pull the rod and the pod.

And inside we have a bore brush, patch puller, punch, and blade.

1. Slide the rod through the cleaning kit body to form a T handle, and attach the brush to scrub the bore.

2. Attach the patch puller to wipe the bore clean.

3. Slide the blade through the pod body to form a T handle to adjust elevation. AKM pod bodies have a different slot pattern, but the principal is the same. I believe this is the intended configuration for elevation.

But I find this improvised method to be more stable.

4. Alternatively, for stuck front sight posts, or very minute adjustments, you can insert the blade end into the slot in the lower section of the pod body.

5. Place the pod cap on a hard surface, opening up. Rest the front sight on the cap with the windage drum centered in the cap. Use the pod body to press the drum.

6. Place the pod cap on a hard surface, opening up. Rest the bolt in the cap with the bottom of the bold facing up. Using the punch, remove the firing pin retaining pin.

After the pin is removed, the punch will still retain the firing pin and the retaining pin will be in the cap. Here I've already dumped it out, but you get the idea.

7. Use the punch to drive out the extractor retaining pin.

8. Use the cleaning rod to apply leverage to remove upper hand guards from gas tubes.

For gas tubes with springs you can either remove the spring, or just apply a little pressure against the spring while turning the hand guard off.

9. Use the cleaning rod to remove various muzzle devices. This is particularly useful when cleaning immediately after shooting is not an option and the muzzle device locks up tight.

10. Use the punch to remove 4.5mm and 5.5mm side folding stock hinge pins.

11. Use the pod body to apply additional leverage against the gas tube retaining lever. You can insert it off the end to apply even more leverage, but I prefer running it as pictured to minimize the possibility of bending or breaking anything, plus it allows you to "twist" stubborn levers, rather than just push or pull them.

12. Slip the notched end of the blade over the lower hand guard retainer lever to apply leverage.

13. Use the cleaning rod to push rags and cleaning cloths through the gas tube.

14. Use the punch to depress magazine floor plate retainers.

15. Use the punch to lift the hammer spring legs.

16. Place pod cap over hammer and hammer spring legs to keep everything together.

17. Use punch to remove axis pins.

18. Slide the notched end of the blade through the pod body and lock it into the oval shaped hole to form a T handled general purpose flat head screwdriver. I have used this on stock screws, grip screws, target stands, etc...

19. AKM blades have a notch on one side. this notch is used as a wrench to tighten the jag on the cleaning rod.

20. AKM caps can be used as a bore guide. Insert the rod through the pod body, then slip the cap on the rod, and attach bore brush. Insert the brush into the bore, slide the cap onto the muzzle nut until it locks into place. Now you can run the brush back and forth without risking damage to the bore or crown.

21. The locking notches in the pod body can be used to scrape carbon off of gas pistons. Insert piston into notch as shown below and turn piston while applying light pressure.

22. Use the punch to pull the cleaning rod.

23. Use the blade to hold the side folding stock latch spring.

24. Use the punch to pry out the side folding stock latch spring retaining pin.

25. Assemble the cleaning rod, pod body, and patch puller as in use #2 insert the patch puller end through the right side rear latch button hole. Slip the side folding latch spring over the patch puller and rod. Insert the punch through the patch puller to retain the spring. Pull the rod to place the spring.

26. Use the punch to center up the side folding stock latch for re-assembly.

27. In stages, use the punch and the blade to hold the side folding stock latch spring out of the way for re-assembly.

28. AKM cleaning kit caps have 2 holes opposite one another. Insert the punch through both holes to remove stubborn caps. This isn't particularly useful for removing the cap from the pod since the punch will most likely be inside if the cap is on. It may come in handy when using the cap as a bore guide.

29. Using the blade and kit body to form a screwdriver, scrape carbon buildup off the muzzle. To protect the crown against damage I stuff a .30 cal bore mop into the muzzle. This keeps the steel blade far away from the crown, rifling, etc... best of all, there is plenty of room in the cleaning kit to make the mop a permanent addition to any kit. It also serves to silence the kit.

30. Use the cleaning rod to push a squib out. Be sure the cleaning rod you are using is longer than your barrel. I keep a RPK-74 rod for this and #31.

31. Use the cleaning rod to remove a stuck case from the chamber. As above, make sure the cleaning rod is longer than the barrel. A RPK or RPK-74 rod works well.

32. Dip the punch provided in the cleaning kit into the oil bottle. Use the punch to apply a single drip of oil with precision. Thank you for bringing this to my attention Funkerman!

All of the above was done using a Bulgarian AK-74 cleaning kit on two SLR-104 rifles.
Photos supplied by bigrog210 show AKM cleaning kit components of unknown origins.
Some rifles and cleaning kits may vary slightly.

You can use cleaning rod to cook squirrels/birds above camp fire. You can use cleaning kit pod to hide secret papers or screwdriver blade to use as weapon up where sun don't shine when you know you'll be taken as a POW.

That's all I could think of :-)

I've never seen a patch puller for an AK kit. Anyone know where to get one?

Great thread! Thanks for the info.
