Default Bubba build 5.56 AK

I am almost done with a bubba build 5.56 AK. A mix of parts., but I hope it will be a good shooter as the components are of good quality.

BARREL- Virgin Bulgarian CLHF SLR from Knob Creek @ $110
Bolt, Carrier & front trunnion- from a M85 virgin kit
rear trunnion/block - Romanian RPK
receiver cover- shortened and profiled Zastava M76
muzzle device- threaded SLR barrel 14mmx1., threaded the take-off SLR fish gill brake and cut plunger slot etc.
scope rail - PAP rail modified to relocate forward on the receiver by 2.125". Used left side trigger guard rivet location.
Barrel components- stripped from another used SLR barrel., drilled FSB for plunger & spring for retaining the muzzle device.
receiver- Nodak Spud Y556
furniture - Ironwood Designs WoodPile sale from several years ago., $48 for the set. stained & finished. Might swap for Polymer black or plum?
Optic- ZRAK M76., might use another type., but eye relief is very good with the relocated optics rail
magazine - standard Zastava M85/90/95 steelmags.

Took a lot of fitting and drilling for the virgin parts, optics rail relocation & fitment and the somewhat wonky 5.56 trigger guard/mag latch, center support and FCG fitment in the 5.56 receiver. Not rocket science but time consuming. The barrel fit nicely with only minor reprofiling the underside for the 5.56 bullet guide clearance.

Need to cut the lower handguard retainer slot, install the furniture hardware and finish in KG GunKote. Hope to range test next week.

How do you determine that these parts will work together? I'm just curious what your thought process is when doing these awesome custom builds. Could you elaborate?

Measuring, mocking up and knowledge of the operating parts of the AK. Some modifications like a custom gas tube or piston are readily made from existing parts. Eg., cut down a M76 long gas tube and re-flare. Or drill out a gas piston base and use a longer or shorter piston shank front end and cross pin.
Barrel drawings like those available from Robert Forbus which he generously shares is a great source.
Trunnion and other fitment is pretty simple and if virgin parts you can often place, pin or locate where you wish assuming the journal or location is compatible with the modification.
Just takes some thinking and mental mock up first., and then some physical mock up and measuring. After handling and building a number of AK's you learn some of the basic fitment.
Then scrounging or being on the lookout for well priced items is very helpful.
The somewhat odd SLR barrels are one example in 5.56 or 7.62. Since they are neither AKM not true AK47 sometimes they are sold cheaper. Not by K-VAR as a rule but they do have sales once in awhile.
Example.,valleyrat has M76 Zastava smooth receiver covers for $9. They can be trimmed and modified to fit virtually any AK build.
After building a number of standard AK's to desire to build something different is fun.
Access to a lathe or a welder or a friend who welds can't hurt either. Though in this case it was not required.
Hope this is some explanation.

As I noted., not rocket science., but it also takes a good bit of hand fitting in some cases and not always plug n' play. Some head scratching is generally required.

I wanted another 5.56 AK. Have several in each caliber but I do like the 5.56 models and they are not as common to find. I decided to build one in a configuration I liked.

Is that brake the press on and pin version? I have its smaller brother with 4 ports and was wanting that one but all I can find is the press on and pin version. Thanks for any replies. Nice looking rifle by the way good job!

I'm working on something very similar. I picked up a virgin M85 trunnion a couple of years ago but didn't really know what to do with it until reading another thread a month or so ago where it was mentioned you could use the Bulgarian 5.56 barrels without gas port location issues. Too simple but it never occurred to me until then so now I'm doing a Yugo'ish AK-102 type build (as a pistol).

I have posted several uses, builds and mock up looks for the SLR barrels in 5.56 and 7.62.

I was referring the the M85 trunnion I had not the 102B(L) or 104B(L) barrels. The whole build spawned from that trunnion.

The trunnion is fine but the barrel is the key. more so in 7.62 but 5.56 either one., Bulgy works.

I'm guessing the barrel length is still 16" ?? Was thinking of doing something similar to get the SBR look without the paperwork hassle. Maybe with a sidefolder...Looks great.

Yes., 16 inches long. On that one I turned the RSB journal down to AKM diameter vs using an AK47 pattern RSB. Easier fit to the trunnion ears and use the battle sight setting that the 47 rear block lacks. No big deal either way. The SLR barrels work great on PAP pistol conversions to long barrels as well.

Sweet build sir

Did you align the rail with the top of the receiver?
