Default Atlantic Firearms; PTR 91-A3S Review

Fellow Filers,

I recently purchased a PTR 91-A3S from Atlantic Firearms and agreed to post a review for them. All that was asked of me was to be honest. All I ask of you is go easy on me, it's my first review.

Looking to expand my small collection of firearms, I decided on the 7.62x51/.308 caliber first. Flirted with the idea of an AR-10 for a bit before choosing the PTR 91-A3S at Atlantic. I wanted something you don't see everyday. I was looking for an AR-15 when I instead went for an AK, very pleased with that decision.

I talked with Blaine at Atlantic as I had heard these rifles can be finicky about ammo. I wanted a rifle that would use steel cased surplus. I had read and Blaine confirmed that those issues had been addressed and corrected. I ordered from Atlantic on 12-22-14 and it arrived at my FFL on 12-26-14! Merry Christmas to me! First impressions were very good. It arrived in great shape and is a beautiful piece of hardware. Good fit and finish and it's built like a tank.

I've had her out 3 times now, twice to my local gun club and once to The Pit in Lapeer, MI. All cold snow covered days. I have a total of 300 to 350 rounds down the tube so far, with zero malfunctions. I had read online and even the owners manual advises to expect some failure to feed and failure to eject issues during "break in". No such issues so far. It has eaten all ammo I have fed it and the majority has been Wolf steel cased .308.

Issues? Just one so far. First outing didn't have much luck getting the iron sights dialed in. Discovered the rear sight drum was loose so I tightened it up, then it would not turn to adjust for range. Too cold to troubleshoot it there, fired another box and headed home. Turned out that there was what looked to be a tiny brass chip in the tube that holds the detent ball and spring that kept the ball from moving when the sight was tightened up. Removed chip, problem gone.

On my second visit to the range I had four shooters actually come over and ask "What is that?" I was all grins, quite satisfied I had found that rifle you don't see everyday!

I am very happy with my PTR 91-A3S, it has met or exceeded any expectations I had for it. More accurate than I am by far with very little felt recoil for a .308. She's great fun to shoot!

I have added a Redfield "Battlezone" 3-9x42 scope on an "AR" flat top riser and think it compliments the rifle very well.

I've asked a couple of our members who have had some hands on time with my newest toy to add their comments to this review and I expect they will.

We all know that Atlantic Firearms has an outstanding reputation here on The Files. I'd just like to add my recommendations. No better place to do business. I'd also like to commend Blaine for being a man of integrity and his word.

I know, pics or it never happened.

Thanks! Sorry but I did not drag any paper home from the range. Would pics of the gong suffice? Hitting my plate at The Pit was a breeze with the irons.

I did neglect to mention the PTR does dent the brass on ejection. I have shown it to a few reloaders and they offered to take it if I didn't want it, lol.

I'll let you and Friday1 have a look at 'em. I expect it'll get a steady diet of steel cased.

Great review. I've definitely enjoyed shooting your gun both times I've gotten the chance. Looks great, shoots great, and you got it for a great price. Definitely a win!

I've had 6 PTR rifles. 91F/91SC/A3R/MSR/SCCR/FR. They have shot surplus/brass/steel well. $1 mags. With work from the shooter and a $50 trigger job they will do sub MOA or better with "decent" ammo and will group 1 to 1.5 MOA doing rapid fire from prone with basic 147G plinking. Great weapons for intended use. Reliable battle rifles, some say are the AK of the 7.62NATO world. Check out there action in the 7.62x39.

Sounds good to me! The PTR certainly feels like a competent rifle. Everything's still pretty tight, the charging handle especially, but it is getting easier to operate every outing. Reading your input it looks like I'm in for some good times ahead!

I'll look into a trigger job even though I have no real complaints on the trigger. Heavier than my AK no doubt but consistent. Then again, I am no expert and appreciate the advice.

Thanks TC, we'll find out what she'll really do once this deep freeze lets up a bit!

I bet a gemtech would be the titts! Imagine your rifle shooting with a woosh rather than an obnoxious bang.

Don't think that I am not tempted. A silent BattleRifle, what a concept, lol.

We all anticipated Mike getting his new rifle and it didn't disappoint. I like the appearance of a battle tested design like this, and when it also is a good shooter that is a bonus. I was impressed with the tight and precise feeling of the action. My old eyes usually have problems with iron sights, but the HK style drum and post works very well. I now have the PTR-91 on my list of rifles I want in the future.
For my old eyes to hit the gong every time was a first without the help of an optic of some kind. Also like the easy magazine insertion and left side charging handle.

Thanks for adding your comments.

I think the PTR is going to be a valued addition to my meager collection. You know you can shoot it anytime you wish so get something neither of us have.

Took her out Tuesday and ran another 150 rds or so through her. Popping clays and ringing an 8" plate at 100yds.

I am enjoying this rifle very much!

Zero malfunctions and the scope mount retains zero nicely.

Checked the bolt gap as recommended by PTR after break in.
.013 inches, well within the .010 to .018 range in the manual.

I can't decide if the thicker barrel is worth waiting for more 91 F's to come in or if I should just grab this.

I predict another PTR very soon either way!

I have been looking at them over the past year. It's gonna be my next purchase. I just gotta wait till I have the funds. I was undecided for a while between a FAL or PTR, but the more I see a PTR the more I like it.

It's a hoot to shoot!

Had it out Tuesday and again Saturday. Zero hiccups and it seems to love Wolf steel cased ammo.

Either it's getting better or maybe I am. Pretty much could not miss.

I enjoyed shooting it. I would love to stretch her legs a bit and see how she shoots at 300-500 meters. A bipod would be a huge upgrade.

Thank you Gentlemen.

I agree, a bipod would compliment the PTR very nicely. Make that will and soon.

I love my ptr91 gi. Super accurate and mild recoil. My only gripe is being a lefty, and not charging it, but if my hand slips to far up the right side I will get pinged with brass ejecting at a million mph. Wish the ejection has a little arch to it.

Also, has any one tried the versa pod AR handguard vent adapter through the rivet on the ptr?

Atlantic, how is the ejection pattern of the 32. I love the 91 I got from you guys other than the crazy fast and low ejection. Just have to think about hand placement more. Is the 32 the same low ejection or does it come out in an arch a little more?
