I recently purchased a number of m44's and a couple 91/30's. They were my first MN's and came with really bright bores,no pitting, clean refinishing and nicely forced matched hardware. AIM and I/O put together some nice orders for me. They are a mis match of 1943's 1944's and one poor old laminated Tula with brass bands. Here's my problem, the only other bolt action rifles I own are modern with the exception of a couple Enfields. I really kinda concerned becuase the ejectors on the M44's and the 91/30's are really stiff to the point where loading a 54r is an exercise in clank bang. I know they were produced by the millions and aren't known for german engineering but is that normal? I've cleaned them whistle bright so I know it's not cosmoline in the breach channel that the ejector fits into, I just dont know if it should be that difficult to get the ejector to engage........
Any insight would be really helpfull. If it's normal I wont worry about it.

Every Non-american Mil-surp Bolt I have ever owned has thrived on being treated like the red headed stepchild. I have heard some in my area call it abuse, some have said it's because they are cheap junk. I usually get in a cursing match and tell the the fuckers to go shove thier Browning A bolt up thier goody-2-shoed ass!
If you are used to commercial rifles it will take some getting used to, to get the mil-surp feel. You should NEVER force something, but a gentle touch doesn't work either. It's the difference in a well trained German Shepard, and my PIT. Both will "slap eat your ass up" One w/ a simple command, one(mine) with a stiff kick in the ass. In summary, If they are in good shape, Load it, Shove that Son Of A Bitch home, and BLAMMO, have fun. Smooth finish and tight tolerances are all well and good in peace time........

thanks for the advice,,,
holy sh*t if you aint making my ass laugh here, it's in the land of forum snubbery,,,,,and your sage advice also probably answers why I'm such a pansy, dancing around these rilfes,,,,all I own is a couple of pussy english setters that wouldn't know how "slap eat yo ass up",,,,but they bark like the mother of wolf dogs released from hell, and will chase down black bear when we're looking for timber doodles,,,,, problem being it's usually when all I've got is a 20 gauge pump with number 7 1/2.... thanks again pal

So, You got a Mosin M-44. Here's something I have learned. Never, and I mean NEVER go to the gun range without it. Here's why: The goofy SOB next to you is a know it all, punk, idiot, whatever. Load the Mosin, and lay it in front of you while you shoot a .22, wait till the dumb asses are close (preferrably when they have no hearing protection) and without warning start touching the thing off as fast as you can shuck the bolt. GOD I love doing that!!!!!!!! They will leave, bet on it.

Ya that's probably as much fun as lighting up the barrett on a mat last summer when the loose straw flew back 40 ft and covered anyone stupid enough to stand in the blow back zone. Even better when the round hit the doubled up tannerite bottles down range no one knew were out there......as you can probably guess our range has pretty loose rules...
Thanks for the fun idea,,,, I'll be more then happy to heade you advice....

No problem with most of my Mosins. Only one of mine needs to be "treated like a red-headed stepchild" to eject and I could fix that if needed.
Are you talking about the extractor or the ejector? If rounds are ejecting weakly you may need a new interruptor/spring, or the interruptor is binding in the channel or being interfered with by the stock. If it's extractor problems, are the rounds not being held by the extractor or is it hard to close the bolt on a round? If not being held, you'll most likely need a new extractor. If tough bolt closing is the problem, look for burrs or roughness and carefully stone it out, or get a new extractor. |

thanks for the advice, it's the extractors that are causing the problem. It occurs in the last fraction of an inch closing when I'm guessing the metal is trying to flex over the rim of the cartridge. The cartridges seat well in the face of the bolt after it's closed it's just that tough fraction of an inch before it locks. Unlike my other bolt actions these dont have "spring steel" (sorry for the terminology) extractors or a channeled extractor like an Enfield. So it may just be the composition of the metal. I'll check on the burrs or roughness. There is also a gun show this weekend in town and I might take an empty brass and see if it's just the way they are all made.
Thanks again.

Hi AKJim. Long time, my friend. I examined the receiver on one of my MN's where the bolt lug engages the vertical cut-out in the receiver wall. The Mosin bolts are designed so that as you press down on the bolt handle the lug in which the handle's mounted rides a diagonal cut-out in the receiver. The milling there is pretty rough - you can see it and feel it when you run your finger over it. I polished one of mine with my rotary tool, a felt polishing drum, and some fine-grit metal polish. It took about two hours and the action's noticeably smoother than before - not a Mauser, but it's better.

Hey My-rifle, thanks for the advice. I've cleaned but have yet to try the polishing. Will give it a shot. thanks again. Ya I know, my Ishapore is smooth as glass compared to these, but they clean up real pretty.
