Default PPS-43 7.62x25 conversion to 9mm NATO, lot's of pics

I have a PPS-43 Pistol that, of course, fired the 7.62x25 pistol round. With that ammo getting scarce and expensive, I decided to convert the gun to 9mm NATO.

I used a KP-44 barrel, and all the was needed was some minor modifications and it slipped right in. It uses the original bolt and magazines without any mods to them at all.

Here are the pictures of the process.

Original PPS-43 barrel on top, KP-44 barrel on bottom

First operation was to turn the muzzle down to .529 in order to slip into the muzzle brake.

Next was to reduce the diameter of the barrel on the chamber end and to reduce the thickness of the flange.

Last step was to mill the clearance for the barrel trunnion. Using a mill was nice, but this can easily be done with a hand file, which I used for the final touch up.

Completed barrel modifications.

Barrel has been touched up with cold blue.

Another pic of the flange. You can see the relief cut where the barrel and flange meet.

9mm rounds loaded in the 7.62x25 magazine. The rounds did not "walk" and all rounds fed without a problem. Magazines will hold 34 rounds.

9mm round in the unmodified PPS-43 bolt. Fits perfect. (Box of my reloads)

Barrel inserted into the trunnion.

Barrel assembled with the receiver.

KP-44 barrel is slightly longer than the original PPS-43 barrel, which is why the muzzle diameter needed to be reduced.

This pin is the only thing you need to remove in order to get the barrel out. Save it and reuse it.

Test fired 4 magazines thru this and not a single problem. A simple adjustment of the elevation was all that was needed. I removed the hinge pin between the upper and lower receiver and drilled it out to 1/4 inch. I'll use a bolt to hold them together. A bolt will allow me to separate the upper and lower for easier cleaning

IIRC, Someone used to sell a 9mm conversion kit in the early 2000's for the PPSH-41...

Thank you for posting. Once my tokarev ammo runs out, this is what I will be doing.

Thanks for the the conversion!!!!

I didn't build the gun, it is a Radom Factory pistol. I just simply changed the barrel.

Nice job. I just pulled apart a Radom pistol to add a barrel extension. Had I seen your thread I would have converted it to 9mm vs extending the x25 barrel. I threaded the front trunnion and used hex head cap screws to reattach the shroud. Makes for easy takedown.

I have a kit but not sure how much semi-auto work is needed to convert it. That I would do in 9mm.

Good job Charly!

Basicaly....semi bolt mod, trunnion, semi FGC, some free time and a few beers.
There is a guy on Weapons Guild that makes and sells drop in FCG, lots of build threads there as well.

I'm guessing about an hour, give or take. Turning the barrel was my first project on my new lathe.

Serious thread revival here! I am looking to do this same conversion, but my barrel seems to be stuck in the trunnion. Can't get it out with a hammer and punch at all, has anyone else run into this?

I think they make direct replacement barrels, no dicking around with a lathe etc. Maybe not available when OP started this a few years ago

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=502305023

Also I know nothing about how these go together, if semi/SMG different etc just saw this on GB

Barrel pin removed, it was in there pretty good too, but I was able to get it out with a punch and hammer. The barrel won't budge, probably going to have to take a press to it.

The gunbroker barrels would still need to be turned down 1mm to fit the pps43c.

You might try heating the barrel trunnion abit.

Im in the middle of a parts kit build myself, almost done with the upper. Halfway done with bolt. Exception to mine is im building it in 45acp. I will have to order a GM barrel blank and turn my own.

That sounds ambitious! What are you going to use for mags?

I'm using original mags, i can feed 45 in the magby hand with no prob. I see only 2 things that mite arise. 1- i beleive that i will have to make a different follower, 2- possibly build a side panel on each inner side wall, maybe .040 on each side. If so i will just cut a couple out out shim stock.

If i remember correctly i think it will hold 12 rounds.

I just fired the last of my Tok ammo. So this conversion to 9mm interests me. I will swap barrels in a few days.

All that is needed is the kvar 9mm barrel. Set barrel as close as you can to magazine so shortest distance possible to feed. Use normal ppsh41 bolt and mags. Flawless.

Just finished swapping to a 9mm barrel. Only hand tools needed to switch barrels. Since I used a new PPS43 SMG barrel. I also needed a lathe to modify barrel OD to PPS-43C profile. Stamped 9mm on receiver.
Next will be range testing.

I can swap barrels between 7.62 and 9mm in less than 2 minutes. Same 7.62x25 magazines work for both. I ALWAYS tie a blaze orange ribbon on the barrel shroud when the 9mm barrel is in it, just soI know at a glance. A 7.62x25 round in a 9mm barrel is not good, but not terrible either, a 9mm in a 7.62 barrel is catastrophic .

Yes, switching barrels is so easy and quick. As long as range testing is satisfactory, I can't envision ever switching back to 762x25. The surplus TOK ammo I had been using was nasty.

A hammer and a pin punch was all I needed to drive the barrel pin in and out. I used a hammer with a wooden dowel to drive out the barrel. A press was not used or needed for this job.

KP Products has most goodies. He can be found at weaponsguild and weaponeer. He's where I got my 9mm barrel. Receiver repair sections at flatspot and a few other sources.

Agreed, KP products is good people. When I started mine he was out of barrels so that I got thru sten parts.

I Would Recommend Buying his receiver flats! I tried another company first and it was too short on the sides at the barrel trunnion by a 1/16" each side so my barrel shroud didn't line up and it put my barrel trunnion rivets too close to the edge for my taste. I contacted KP and told them my problem and asks for width measurements at this area and he was fast to reply complete with measurements. I ordered it, bent it up and came out about .060 longer on each side with nice rivet placement. Welded her up, flat file and in a few minutes I had the perfect length and rivet placement. Save yourself a lot of work and head scratching and just get his flats.
