With so many diverse viewpoints being posted, especially recently, I thought it'd be interesting to take a poll
I'll begin Steve in El Paso |

20 Votes out of 175 viewers, huh?
What's wrong with this picture? Dreamers, or people with convictions willing to participate? Lurkers, sign up. No, not BATF here (regular home builder) just purifying the dross. Several kids on the board lately - who's an owner and who's not..... |

Thanks for participating, shooters! You other guys / gals, join in
This sort've confirms, is it's almost impossible to own just one AK. I think that's pretty normal / average, and most of you seem the same way. Isn't it nice to know we're all normal!? heh heh heh Steve |

I had to lie a little in this poll, but close enough I think.
My real answer would be, own more than one and am in the process of building 4.

Close enough - just pick one that best describes you
I owned two before starting my first build; now have 3 store-bought, and 9 home-built - 7 of the homebuilts were experiments (pistols or drumfeds or both) I don't claim they're practical, mostly just fun to build and shoot No expert builder here, mostly a curious tinkerer / experimenter. Would enjoy building a beltfed type AK / PKM Steve |

Seems just as many (who voted) that built ONE, went on to build FIVE or MORE.
What's that tell ya? They're fun to build, and VERY addictive. It can easily become as much fun as shooting. I believe most who've built would agree to that You folks that haven't voted yet, just click on one of the 'totals' up top and place your 'vote'. Only takes a couple seconds - Steve |

My name is KernelKrink and yes, I am a build-a-holic. Started out with AR15s, graduated to FALs, went on to G3s and now here I am in my AK phase. Lots of sidetracking along the way of course, 1911s and such, but those are my main addictions.
See if this sounds familiar: Wow, they have a new type of rifle kit and the receiver price is reasonable. Why not, I can save a whole lot over buying a pre-ban! Now that kit is sitting there built and I think to myself, well I better grab a few extra parts, never know when something might break and it's not like Brownells sells spare AK or G3 rifle parts. Hmmnnn.... I could buy a few spares and have so much money in them I could buy another kit for a few bucks more. Why not, that way I will have all the parts necessary to repair it no matter what breaks! So another kit gets put in the closet. After a couple months and nothing has broken on the original rifle build, you get to lookin' at that second kit and thinking how nice it would be to have another rifle going. You could do a better job building this one, make those welds or rivets look better now that you have some experience. Maybe even customize some parts since you already have a standard one. Of course, you're still gonna have to get another kit so you can have those spare parts.... Now magazines, well they're cheap and you can never have too many right? Plus, they're handy for storing all that ammo in. Dang, i don't have enough ammo to fill all those mags I just bought. What the heck, SG has a special on Wolf. Dang, now I got more ammo than mags and I'm out of stripper clips.....

Nah, I never use the kitchen table for linking ammo, that's what the ammo reloading room is for.
Just kidding, I don't have anything that requires links. Yet. If I had the cash a semi auto 1919 and MG42 would definitely be on the to-do list. Those American 180 semi auto plans that Panaceabeachbum posted on his website look interesting too, but the price of drums is kinda up there. IIRC, the original manufacturer was supposed to sell "disposable" pre-loaded drums with the MG version. "Disposable" as in plastic and you could reload them, but they would be so cheap you wouldn't want to. What happened to that plan, eh?

Semi 1919's can be built for less than 650 bucks! Thats about what your gonna pay for 2 nicely done AK kits! And trust me, once you build one, NOTHING in your collection will even come close. Everyone that walks into your gun room will go directly to your 1919. And talk about getting looks at a gun range! I have been personally kicked off my range cause 'they didnt like my kind of people!" (F-em, I needed a new range anyways....)
Get the kit from OOW for 299, sideplate for 100, internals milled for about 125 and a KMP trigger and sear for about 80. They are easier to build than an AK! www.1919a4.com is a soup to nuts building tutorial.

Scott - and everyone else
Sideplates are available here for $75, plus your semi machine work http://www.stenparts.com/Sideplates/sideplates.html Bought my kit from Ohio Ordinance for $299, left sideplate still attached, which made building a breeze http://www.ohioordnanceworks.com/ look under parts & sets / 1919 / grade B They also sell links @ $70 per 1,000 & sometimes cheaper, w/ fast shipping. Mr. Bob Landies (the owner) is one of the best in the CIII world 1919 beltfed is much easier to build than an AK ![]() I met a fellow at KCR (FIVE WEEKENDS AWAY!) two yrs ago, who'd just bought his first 1919 kit. He was so excited. It seemed like such an 'advanced' project to me. Well 6 months later I had my own up and running. Saw him again at the spring shoot, and he laughed when I told him he'd inspired me in that direction. Now we cross paths every 6 months and always have alot to discuss ![]() Everything you need to know is at http://1919a4.com/forums/index.php including 8mm conversion, plus the show & tell section http://1919a4.com/forums/showthread....highlight=show 8mm is a nickel a round - at 5K rounds, it's cheaper to build & shoot a 1919 beltfed than your AK (plus it just feels right) and Numrich has the A6 kits (stock, bipod, carry-handle & flash-hider) on sale right now for $150 in SGN. 8mm packs one heck of a wallop - lots more than .308 Drums and belts really are the way to go Steve in El Paso / the southwest desert PS I think I hijacked my own thread VOTE the poll at the top!

Yeah, the kits and other parts are relatively inexpensive. It's all that ammo that breaks the bank. And the links. And the tripod. And the crankfire or that new FA "Simulater". And all that ammo. And more ammo.
Really, the practical use of a belt fed weapon the size and weight of the Browning requires full auto fire. A semi is a fun toy but would not be my first choice for any purpose I can think of. Other than fun at the range, of course. Now if I had the disposable income where, to my mind at least, I could afford all that fun, I would build one. Not there yet. |
