Default 7.62x54R Kalashnikov Assault Rifle

Seeing the post for a 7.62x25 sub machinegun version of an AK rifle I have come up with this idea.

If this is "old news" please excuse my ignorance, I'm still new here.

I know I'm going out on a limb here, but the thought has crossed my mind to build a high caliber AK. The 5.56x45 AR-15/M-16 has it's 7.62x51 AR-10 counterpart. I figure why not give it a try with an AK?

My guess would be to study both a Romanian PSL kit (if anyone knows where to find one please point me in the right direction) and a standard Romanian AK kit (to help stay consistent). I was thinking that with a lot of head scratching and shop work it should be feasible.

I honestly think the hardest part to undertaking a project of this type would be making a 20 or 30 round magazine using the ROMAK 10 rounder as a model.

If anyone else has any thoughts or suggestions PLEASE feel free to post away!

I've really gone and done it this time haven't I...?

Right now I have a project where I've got a PSL kit I'm fitting to an Ohio Rapid Fire M76 milled receiver. The barrel and bolt are the same size.I also have an M76 kit.Need to mix and match parts. For larger magazine the closest so far is the Bren magazine but there may be better choices. For now I'm going with the 10 round PSL or maybe an SVD mag.

modding the bolt face would be to much fun for this boy an a 54r conversion,, let alone the mags. I am going to go the 8mm route and use mg-13 or browning bar-d mags

My favorite for a major caliber AK would be to build one in 45-70 Govt using a Saiga .410 shotgun for the donor.

These mags are used for the Semi-Auto BREN 7.62x54R conversions:

ZB39 Spare Magazines:
25 round magazine in 8 x 56R. May have applications for use in 7.62 x 54R firearms. Will feed in a standard Bren Gun. Will also feed 7.62 NATO rounds. Mags. $20 ea. ($5. S&H) or 10 for $150. ($12. S&H)

The reason that there are no mags with more than 10 rounds for 7.62X54R is because they could never get a larger capacity mag to function reliably. Look at the round and how the cases taper, you'll get the idea.

Really...?

I had no idea about this, I figured it was just that more than 10 rounds in a "sniper" rifle wasn't practical. I mean these guys are supposed to train in the philosophy of one shot one kill.

So if the 7.62x54R gave designers trouble, why do ya' figure that the 8 x 56R 25 round magazine worked?

Do you happen to know of a source for this info?

Thanks!

it has to do with rimmed and non rimmed cases. Why do you suppose they didn't make a lot of 38 special and 357 magnum automatics? It's because the case rim won't allow you to stack the rounds very deep. Auto pistol rounds have no rims. Same thing with rifles.

The Bren uses .303 Rimmed, the magazines are 30 rounds.

your wrong, The action absorbs most of the kick, much like a garand doesn't have a lot of recoil.

The AK47 is a cheap POS designed to be assembled in third world shitholes by a labor force composed of knuckle dragging, booger eating morons. It was then to be handed out to an army of uneducated peasant retards who couldn't find their own ass with both hands and a map. Thats the true genius of the design and why it remains ubiquitous to this day.

Aside from the big mag, only the additional pound of steel gives away the caliber...
