Muslim girls must swim with boys: Swiss court

A Muslim family in Basel has been fined 1,400 francs ($1,550) for refusing to let its daughters participate in mixed swimming classes.

The family had sought to avoid paying the fine on the grounds that the requirement for the girls to join the swimming lesson infringed on their religious freedom, online news website Le Matin reported.

The parents argued that, in accordance with the teachings of the Koran, they wanted to instil a sense of shame in their children before they reached puberty. Mixed swimming lessons in primary school, the family claimed, would be incompatible with such an aim.

Following the family’s appeal of the original Administrative Court verdict, the Federal Court decided to uphold the fine. The court stated that the obligation to participate in mixed swimming classes did not represent a significant assault on the family’s religious freedom.

The upper court said it agreed with the Administrative Court's view that there was a “substantial public interest that all children take swimming lessons”.

The law is the law. Interesting: My travels in Europe have led me to think the Swiss are the most racist of all the European nationalities. The French are probably a close second. The Germans, Spanish, Italians, and English aren't even on the same playing field. Most European nations are fairly egalitarian preferring to judge people on the content of their character rather than outward characteristics like race and religion, but Switzerland and France are not. I've run across more racism and religious-based bias in those two countries than anywhere else I've been.

Curiously France is my favorite European nation. Who'd have thought?

So, just because the Swiss want to protect their national interest and identity, that makes them racist? Diversity and Multiculturalism is the quickest way to destroy a country.

my-rifle is correct about europeans being racist, but I think it's worse that he does.

the idea we have over here, that the euros are some super-evolved egalitarian flying-car social model is BS. they are just as bed as everybody else, especially the US. they are just more realistic about it.

the project housing in much of europe is minority-occupied. practically all arab in france, substantially so in england.

I'll never forget a train ride I took from Milan to Marseilles sitting next to an older Swiss couple as they talked incessantly about what sub-humans the French are - and Italians, Spanish, Greeks - pretty much everyone who knows how to eat well and have fun in life. Eventually I downed a bottle of wine and went to sleep.

You're right about the image Americans have of Europeans being "socially progressive". Except for the Germans not a word of it's true. All over Europe, nations have managed to preserve their cultural identity, and they are each convinced that they and they alone have the cultural purity necessary to pull humanity out of the mess they are in.

Is it possible these are Swiss girls who are Muslim? Maybe there is no flea-bitten shithole for them to go back to - unless Switzerland has become flea-bitten since the last time I was there. No, seriously I agree they need to just suck it up or move, but it's just possible that they are native to Switzerland and not immigrants, you know?

I would more than likely - my in-laws in the UK are amazed at the rate of immigration on-going there.....more and more areas turning muslim and other...weekly.

And last time I checked....Muslims were not indigenous to Switzerland...

Islam is a religion not a race. Lots of people who are "natural born citizens" convert to Islam. There are almost certainly Swiss people who are Islamic.

That being said England seems to have suffered more than other nations due to their egalitarian approach to citizenship and rights. The French, Italians, and Spanish do not seen to suffer from that burden. Their Islamic minorities are pretty harshly treated.

And almost as certainly they are not the ones at the root of this.

Further, Islam was not a local or historic religion in the area....any more than it was in the UK..
