I have asked for a definitive, knowledgable answer to the following question on a couple of the other forums, and all I get are confused people (as I am!) answering.
PLEASE, NO OPINIONS, I HEARDS..... I THINKS..... Please, please, please, ANYONE who has built a milled Bulgarian AK-47 kit to successful completion recently: What is the barrel you used and where did you get it? Did all barrel components fit your barrel correctly? Anyone use a GM barrel? There HAS to be someone out there in AK-land that has built one of these rifles!! (Besides the Bulgarians, of course) EDIT: This is going to built on a CNC Warrior Milled Russian Receiver w/ a barrel trunnion ID of .907". And, I prefer a NEW barrel, not a Yugo with it's minor issues. Also, not one of the KVAR $$$$ barrels. (I know, I'm picky!!)

I'm building a Bulgarian AK47 kit, but am building it on an AKM stamped receiver. I'm using an M70 Yugo barrel, and all the barrel components fit the journals on the barrel properly (naturally, a little emory work may be necessary).
The only issue is that the lower hand-guard retainer slot is forward of where it needs to be for a non-Yugo handguard, so that needs to be filled and recut, or a spacer made to take-up the extra space between the retainer and the hand guard. If you are building yours on a milled receiver, someone else will have to chime-in on the M70 rear journal (where the barrel pin is installed). It fits the Romanian AKM front trunnion I'm using perfectly, but that may not be the case on something different. |

You can get a new M70 pattern barrel from AKbuilder (for $79) if you can't find one with a more traditional retainer slot position.

I have built 4 and the barrel I purchased from Copes fit perfectly I just had to adjust the headspace and drill the barrel pin... I also have used the Romy barrels from Centerfire and had to reprofile them which I love to do extra work extra time and those have turned out well... On those you will have two extra notches on the barrel not used one on the RSB and one on the HGR...

Opps your right but the Copes barrel will fit the Milled Bulgy Milled receiver will it not.... Ok I agree on the Centerfire barrel that it might need to have some work done but it to will still fit into the milled receiver unless its a threaded receiver......Please correct me if I'm wrong..; I have only built 2 milled Ak,s

Well, he didn't say the Yugo barrel was off the table specifically. In response to the suggestion, he said he wanted a quality NEW barrel, which I read to mean he thought all the Yugo barrels available were take-offs (which they aren't). Anyway, I'm sure he can make his way from here.

Specifically, what exact barrel did you buy, AND did all the Bulgy kit components mount correctly to the barrel, WITH NO MOD'S??? (Other than "minor" fitting) The 1960's barrel is not correct for a Bulgy milled build. I have had extensive communications with a couple of people who have MISTAKENLY bought this barrel for the Bulgy milled builds using a CNC receiver. The trunnion diameter is NOT correct, and the barrel is flanged. Major mods have to be taken to use this barrel. The 1970's barrel IS correct, EXCEPT for the location of the H/G retainer slot. I DO NOT want to use a used Yugo barrel. I will use a NEW Yugo barrel as a last resort, and relocate the slot. I have located several sources for New Yugo barrels, and several more for used ones. If I am going to the trouble and expense of getting all the correct parts, first time, I sure as hell don't want to half-ass something right off the bat. Capiche? AKBlue, Thanks. I was being polite and not telling people to learn to read. Just sayin, too... Now, with that said, I certainly appreciate EVERYBODY's comments and attempt to help me.

Well, if you do go ahead an use a new Yugo "pattern" barrel, please let us know.
That way I'll feel vindicated, lol... ![]() Anyone ever wonder if someone made an easy to find "plug and play" barrel for these, would the kits still sell for $99? |

The 1970's pattern barrel will work, BUT, it is a YUGO profile and the handguard slot is set .430" +/- further forward than the Bulgy. Not a big problem, just weld up slot and turn it down, but I don't have a welder or a lathe. I am trying to find a NEW barrel, US or import, chrome or not, that will work AS-IS, with NO mods, right out of the box. I know KVAR has one, and that is very pricey. Add the barrel to the expense of a milled receiver and small parts, a parts kit, shipping, etc...and the build starts to get very expensive, way out of my projected budget. Copes also has one for $200+, but it appears to be "used", and has a 90 deg. gas port, not 45. Again, thanks for everyone chiming in and trying to help. I am sure we will get this resolved one way or another!!

Call GM and ask for an oversized trunnion diameter barrel.
