Hello all,
Does someone have an easy way to replace the mag catch release spring and mag catch back into the trigger guard? This is worse than replacing the extractor in a FAL bolt. Parts just don't fly as far. Come on now, one of you guys has this done to a fine art. Flash |

You might consider assembling the spring in the mag catch lever using a pin short enough to clear the insides of the mag catch "well" and still hold things together. That way your only problem is winding up the "leg" of the spring as you place it in the trigger guard. Once you accomplish that you tap the pivot pin in, driving the assembly pin out as you go. To make the pivot pin easier to install, I spin them in a hand drill and slightly bevel the end so it starts into the hole(s) easier.

When doing virgin trigger gaurds, I put a philips screw driver of the oppropreate diameter into a vise. Put the sping onto the shaft, get a small zip tie (large ones won't fit between the catch and the gaurd).... Start the zip tie and place it over the legs, pinch the legs together with needle nose pliers and zip the zip tie tight.
The small zip ties have just enough strenght to keep the legs together, cut the tail off the zip and slide it in. Once the pin is in slip a razor blade in to cut the zip lose. It also helps if you chant the right cuss words loudly while your installing it. If you don't know the correct phrase pm me and I'll see if I can locate it. BTW-got busy will have shipping info tommorrow.

Get a pair of vice grips, loosen it till it almost locks shut. Now take the spring and place the ends in the teeth and use the grip to compress it then lock the grip. The teeth in the grip hold the spring ends.Get ya a piece on soft wire, like bailing wire and place the wire around the closed spring and give it a couple wraps.Get your mag catch, place the spring inside(drops right in) and put the spring and catch in place.Put the pin in and then cut the wire holding the spring and remove it.No need for a slave pin.5 minutes maybe is all it takes.Just be careful closing the spring in the grips.I'd do it in a big box.LOL

As we all know this is a bitch. What I have done (and it has gotten easier each time) is, I use the punches from H depot that match the hole size for the pin. I start by putting the small punch in the hole with the spring the right way. I will then manover the the latch in with the small punch, wiggling the catch and spring then inserting the correct size punch for the hole to position the punch thru the whole thing. Once the right size punch is in I will then start the pin fron the other side and wiggle it around. And when it is just right it will pop in. Believe it or not, with practice it becomes easy. All good ideas. I have several to rebuild am sure this input will help.
Why are they demilling these trigger guards in the 1st place? While i am complaining who do we need to bribe to stop the barrel ban/cutup. I bet we can get everyone on the boards to contribute something. That's how things are done in DC. Trigger guards and barrel rebuilds sure complicated the whole process, but we are buying made in the USA. flash |
