Default Hunting with my dad today (one graphic pic) maybe NSFW

As some of you know my step mom has Alltimers (how ever you spell it) and has for going on 7 years now. The reason I’m telling you this is that my dad and I never get to do things together. My step mom has 5 kids of her own that will not lift a finger to help out. If my dad wants to go do something for the weekend I have to go stay with my step mom. He found a family friend to stay with her for the weekend.

We used my .308 for this hunt. I was hoping to find him a 400 yard shot, yes I had the dopes figured out and proofed out to 500 yards. Well that didn’t work out. I got him 80 yards from a big fat cow that had no idea we where there. He looks at me and says where should I shoot it. I said put the cross hairs on its eye ball and squeeze the trigger. He looked at me with that look like I was crazy. I said squeeze the trigger.

For the first time in my life he listened to me

I don’t know why but I only took a couple pic’s

Pic of my dad with his Elk. Its left eye was the entry hole

This Elk was almost looking strait at us. I did a little skinning so I could see the exit hole a little better. This is the back of its head

This trip meant a lot to me. I enjoy spending time with my dad and don’t get to do it often

Hey thats an awesome day afield.

Nothing like some quality time with a mans father - I know I cherish the memories I have of time in the field with my dad.

Damn I miss him.

Anyways tell him congrats on a good, clean kill!

Thanks guys

I know that my dad knows that I know what I’m talking about. He’s seen me hit targets with this rifle at 1400 yards. I’ve killed more elk with a bow than he’s killed in his life.

It’s just hard for me. He’s 62 and I know that he’s not going to be around forever. This is the first time in about 3 years we’ve been able to go do something by our self.

I’m extremely proud of my old man today

I'd give a king's fortune to hunt with my dad one more time. It will not come to pass, this side of heaven. Good hunting, Elkaholic. Congrats to your pa.

Now that's a good day. Elk hunting with dad is as good as it gets.
I too would give all I own to spend woods time with my father,he
died in 1989.

I am an "elkaholic" also. I use a .375 Hollands. It kills right now
with a hit in the boiler room.

best regards,

Nice shot!

I wish I could talk my dad into going hunting, he's just lost all interest in it over the past decade or so.

I know what you mean. I've hunted with my dad for the past 40 years. This past fall was the first time we didn't go hunting together and it felt really empty. He's over 70 now and it's getting hard for him to do that much walking. One more thing...nice elk!

Thanks again for all the kind words guys and girls

I wish I would have gotten a pic of dad with the rifle but I didn’t.

The rifle is a Savage FCP 10, McMillan with a NightForce NXS 5.5-22 sitting on top of it. The ammo was a load I worked up using a 165gr Speer hot core bullet traveling at 2700 FPS

Ding, I’ll get you a few packs of Elk meat. It was funny, my dad was asking about you this weekend. He likes you for some reason. LOL.

You were definitely set up for that 500 yard shot!

And so here's the song I mentioned earlier.

If you would have asked me 2 years ago if I’d ever spend $2000.00 on a scope I would have said HELL NO. Then a buddy took me out and let me hit a 1000 yard target with his rifle. I’ve never really been one to half ass anything, if I’m going to do it I’m going to do it right. The buddy that let me shoot his rifle hooked me up with some of his long range friends and his rifle. I went shooting with these other people and they had all different kinds of scopes. All of them let me look thuw there glass and shoot there rifles.

I liked the KnightForce the best. I love this scope and I’m already saving for another, even thou I don’t have a rifle to put it on yet

Good on you! The last time I saw my Dad alive was after we went hunting. We didn't bag a damn thing but memories for me............
We had the best time together-quality time. He passed that following April.
I so miss him, especially when my wife and had bought our farm. The first deer I got was from my back porch which,by the way was where I had intended my Dad to hunt from as he was having more of a hard time dealing with the cold.
Every time I am in the woods I have him on my mind.

Everyone, give your Dad a big ol' hug while you can. For those of us who cannot, give a toast and prayer of thanks for what hand he played in making you the man you are today.

Ted,
Yeah. I'm right there with you. Whenever I have a rifle in my hands, or I'm afield chacing the game I think of my dad. I also think how proud he'd be of my youngest son, Noah as he and I are chasing game. Often times I will recall a hunting story of my dad when my boy and I are out. I figure he'll know his grandpa through me by the stories I tell. I teach him to track, read the wind and stalk just like my dad taught me.

It is through hunting we become immortal.

Look what the cat drug in

How the heck you been doing Jim? Id be more than happy to take you hunting but the post might start out with… hunting with grandpa

Dad didn’t have to do much hiking on this trip. It was a special damage hunt; they gave us a key to drive behind closed gates. Luckily for him I know this area like the back of my hand and know where the Elk like to hang out. The tallest mouton I’ve climbed in this area is only 3000 feet tall

Doing ok by any grandpa standards,,you friggin whipper snapper,,, on this side of the dirt, so I consider myself blessed. As for hunting,,,,Now that was a different story. Another deer season with nothing in the freezer,,,and no moose permit.... About the only thing up here left in the woods are big assed coyotes and trout fishing. Didn't even get ice in until about two weeks ago, God Bless Global warming...
But can't complain, still gainfully employed and that Barrett that I sold financed my light sport pilot license that I finished in July. Got a pile of videos on the fun,,
http://youtu.be/41C6Rp1RRLk
Now working on my private (as soon as the FAA gives me a "special" medical clearance, ticker problems) and Basic Ground Instructor certificate, gotta keep the old brain cells from going to mush...
But anyways, wonderful Elk you gotthere you nut. keep up the good work for the rest of us wannabe Elka holics... between you and Bigwheel and his wonder White fishing I can live vicariously all year round. Keep em coming.
Cheers Boys...
Jim Out...

akijim;

So you're back from your walk?

Sounds like you had a good time.
