I am looking to get some new boots and need advice. I live in KY were the winters can get as low as into the 20's/30's and summers get into the 90's. I would like to find one pair of boots, but do not know if I can get away withhot weather boots and warm socks for winter, or intermediate cold boots in summer. Only pair of 'military ' boots I have had was my old black leathers from late 80's. Please help me with your advice and experience.

Danner boots are top of the line. Currently i'm using the Danner RAT used by USMC, where i'm at in Texas it has the same climate maybe a little higher and lower. I wore these boots all winter with no need of extra socks, no problem. This summer with 100 degree heat no problem. These boots are water proof using gortex and breathable. I found my pair on ebay for $80.00.
Sportsman guide sells the same boot made by Wellco for $80.00 new. Wellco is also a government contractor. These boots are recraftable, a big plus. Danner makes many models, i just prefer the military models, and from this day forward they will always have gortex. I would recommend a half size larger if purchased new. Prior, to these i wore bates model 922. for 10 years. I work outside, around water all year, keeping dry is a big part staying warm, especially in the winter. Hope this helps

thanks for the tips, went straight and looked at the Danners, but Ouch! Cost, can't afford 350 or so. Didn't see any on ebay. However, have decided to get the Bates USMC and Wellco USMC. ANy suggestions on which brand may be of better quality?

just1more, it will be a couple of weeks before I can order anyway, so I will keep an eye out for them. I have just never ordered from ebay or used paypal. Had a friend have his card hacked a couple of times, s I have been a little leary. But I came up with a plan for that!

Newbaby, go to the boot store in Nicholasville (it's on Nich'ville Rd about halfway between Lexington and Nich'ville proper, has a big old western store front) and get a pair of Ariat Cascades. They've got a nice mix of combat and work boot features, proprietary waterproof lining optional. I think they come standard with polymer toe reinforcement, with the option of steel toes. I have a pair of the Cascade H2O's (the waterproof ones) and they've been great, I put them through hell living and working in rural Africa last year, and unlike some Goretex look-alike's, Ariat's waterproofing technology WORKS. They're about $120. Extremely comfortable and long lasting.
Although, I think the little fringey thing on the bottom of the laces (I'm blanking on the correct term) looks stupid, so I took them off mine. |

talaananthes, yeah, I have been to The Boot Store a few time as I grew up in Lexington and went to school there. I called them and they do not have any true military boots. Appreciate the heads up though.
I also signed up for The Breakroom and looked around. However, I found another sight that has new Bates USMC durashocks boots for 80 and I will be ordering a pair tomorrow. Although I did not go with Danner, I thank you for suggesting them as looking into them I did find this other pair that is a pretty good deal. |

I'd look into the Ariats. I'm not sure what you need your boots to do that they won't . . . they look and wear like combat boots. I've run mine hard, and they're still kicking, and very comfortable for long time spent standing or walking. Then again, I'm always super leery about buying boots off the internet.

Love these boot threads, I used to trae them trying to find the best, I have now tried a bunch, German, Italian, Filson, Danner, USGI issue in all styles. I finally feel confident in recommending La Sportiva Makalu and Lhotse models. I get lots of complements from hikers in the know about my choice. If your finally really serious about getting into the best, give them a look. Cheers!
