Default Bakelites still being imported?

I remember like a year ago bakelite mags were easy to come by at $40 or less per, and now it seems they are all dried up and commanding some steep ass prices. Has there been some kind of import ban or something? Just trying to guage wether I should buy some at the $60-70+ a piece or if in the coming future they will be available again

Big shipment got seized from a dealer in the U.S by ATF, and Russian customs knows what to look for and is seizing almost everything in the grey mag market.

Being military surplus, their stockpiles have largely been discovered and offered to the market for sale.

Some pockets yet undiscovered may still be recovered and offered up here for sale. Time will tell.

And it is my understanding it is illegal to import these mags by non approved, unpaperworked (is this a word?) importers.

I have a few and would love to get some more but last year I was getting Izzy’s ON GUNBROKER no less, for $30 and $32 bucks. I will not pay 50-60-70 bucks for a Bakelite when metal surplus are under $20 and feed the beast just as well in my opinion.

Have noticed a lot of yellow flaggers scooping up a ton of bakes in the past couple months. Like within seconds of the ad being posted. If it makes them happy, I'm all for it, but that's why you're seeing ads like two 30 rounders for $130, any condition. I don't blame them.

Prices on everything have gotten overwhelmingly ridiculous in just the past few months. I saw a US Palm grip sell for $80 on another site. Crazy at what some people will pay.

What's the main reason the bakelites weren't/ aren't being imported in greater quantities? You'd think the former Soviet states would have dumped their older stocks for cash, including Ukraine before the current hostilities. How many bakelites did the Soviets make?

Looks like no online retailer has these in stock at the moment. Is this a trend you commonly see with these mags? I know they can not be rare, as you see ads everyday in the marketplace.

Sounds like US and Russia have been cracking down on these in recent months.

What is Millions, Alec.

Probably over a million state side. Not rare by any means.

Not too long ago the Mag Resellers were brining in quite a bunch at a time. I recall the price was $15 for 5.45 and $10 for 7.62 from Russia/Ukraine. Price doubled or tripled once it cleared customs.

I was buying them straight from a guy in Russia. I can remember him saying aomething towards he orders them straight from the factory. So I can imagine they have a crap load of them.

I was paying around $23shipped a 7.62 Bakelite.

Alaska isn't that far from Russia really. Should charter a boat and go out "cod fishing".

Most I’ve paid for 7.62 or 5.45 bakes is $35 a mag. Can’t believe how much they are selling for these days...

Are they really that expensive in the USA?

I see them at nearly every militaria show here for around $20 USD for 7.62x39. 5.45 Bakelite are a bit more expensive as there are not as many of those around.

Disclaimer to mods: I am not offering anything for sale. While mags are not controlled by law within the UK, I am unsure if there are any UK laws against shipping them internationally. I would prefer not to be a test case.

Default US Laws

There may not be a UK law about. But I am fairly certain there are US laws about importing "Militaria" into the US.

Unless you have the correct license-permits to do so.?

MJ

And this is the wrong forum for mags.

I'm surprised it took three days for someone to point that out

But seriously, I don't know what is behind the recent trend of high prices. They've all but disappeared in my AO.

I should have said 7.62 specifically. When were they $10? I've never seen one anywhere near that low. 20 years ago I never saw any 7.62 bakelites around.

A couple 3 years ago I got 8 - 30 rounders at $12.00 a piece.

Makes it difficult to spring for these new higher prices.

The OP bought them. Sucker born every minute.
I sold 3 nice ones for $108 shipped a couple months ago.

OP, maybe stop buying them for the "Steep Ass Prices" and people will stop listing them for that.

Yep, a handful of suckers have totally changed the bake market in the MP in a matter of a couple weeks. Time to start looking elsewhere.

I might have to soon list 2 bakes for $200 shipped and my discontinued Magpul ODG furniture for $300

A very well known dealer, whoever did the import said the mags were 1 thing, when they were infact something else.
