OP, any competent AK 'smith can do the work ( there is no need for a special FFL just to work on NFA weapons )

I think it might be threaded and has a different barrel that required shimming the shoulder for headspace and then a pin and / or weld was placed to hold the barrel in place.

If it was made from a deactivated firearm, the receiver may have been cut / split at the threads at one time and unable to take a torqued barrel.

Maybe it has some sort of sleeved Chinese or pressed barrel.

Yes
That poor fuckin Russian

A press and pin(rpk) barrel crammed in threaded "adapter sleeve" that's threaded into receiver and pinned (with a akm pin btw). Barrel then welded to sleeve and possible receiver also. Appears welded to sleeve while in place and looks like syht

I would send that to a competent AK smith to have that pinned and welded barrel removed, then clean/repair that receiver up to as close as factory spec as possible, source an original Russian (or other communist country barrel that will fit and be “correct” ) for the replacement.

Such a fine weapon deserves the effort and money to be what it should be.

A transferable is worth sending to an A+ smith who specializes in AKs. Don't skimp on restoring and repairing that.

I totally agree. I had a long talk with the gunsmith and he seemed pretty solid

Nothing really to tell, I bought from one of the more well know dealers, it is an old form 1 reweld, I just barely got it in. I wish I knew more too, I think it was built in AZ...Can one do a Freedom of information act request and get the old copies of form 1, 3, 4's?
thx

That's a really odd setup, hopefully you can get it restored nicely--seems like it should be doable.
