Default Guard Dog.

Everyone knows dogs are among the best criminal deterrents one can get. In hard/bad times, I'm curious what breed you guys believe would serve a guard dog role best?

I am thinking real hard about a fila brasileiro for this task. Yes they are big, and they will eat a little more, but from my experience really no more than a high energy dog like a shepherd. A good buddy has a great dane/mastif mix, over 200 lbs and he eats less than some labs I've seen. This is also true of another friends Fila. The Fila/mastifs are very hearty/strong dogs that I believe would far well in rough times, plus they will not out of boredom chew up everything under the sun. They are quite happy just laying around until the time comes to bite an arm off. They are great around & guarding other animals as well.

What say you guys?

I have owned 2 Rotweillers and highly recommend them. They are great family pets as well as possessing the traits to be obedience trained and attack on command trained.

Other than that, you can't beat a good ol German Shepherd.

dramagram - You mentioned the Fila Brasilerio and that is certainly a possibilily although not very well known in the USA. I have a 60 lb female Black Mouth Cur and which is an awesome guard dog - very powerful bark, territorial, intimidating for her size, and has a deep bark like a large male. I've seen some very large Dobermans - one very recently that was probably 120 lbs. Most of my reading on the subject is regarding the Presa Canario, which is a Guard Dog breed which is a Mastiff cross bred dog originating in the Canary Islands. They were bred to drive off or kill predators including other dogs. Very power muscular dogs. The Belgian Malinois mentioned is a fine guard breed also.
In my own mind among the considerations regarding the breed one might seek out - is the dog going to live out side, on acreage? Or indoors. Or a combination there of.
This is important for one primary consideration and that is the ability of the specific breed to take cold or heat. Longer coats for more harsh winter conditions and cooler average temperatures. The Presa Canario can take heat, and in that regard another great guard type dog that can take heat extremes and great stress is the Rhodesian Ridgeback. My nephew owns a female that tips the scale at over 120 lbs, but there are breeders which raise examples at 120 lb females and 160 lb males.
So short haired breeds for heat and longer hair for cold environments, if being out doors a lot is in their daily mix. Lots of video on the various guard dog type breeds - sometimes, as in the Black Mouth Cur, or Catahoula, and others, there is sufficient dog there to be a good guard dog without the exotic tags that go with some.

Do people deliberately stay away from Hounds these days. Many years back they were the guard dogs and people love them. Too violent or what?

Half Pit Half German Shepard. Bark scares the shit outta ya ... but sadly all bark and no bite (that I know of anyway). I wanted a Belgian Malinois but the daughter and wife fell in love with this.

This is cool too:

I had a Rotty once, great dog. However all you really need is a dog that will alert you when anything is going on outside, a chihuahua could do this. Anything that is going to wake you up at night before it’s too late. Just about any dog will protect you when they know you are under attack, labs are good at that, happy go lucky by day but don’t under estimate them when shit is going doen, they will protect when danger is sensed.

I have dobermans/german shepherds and a french mastiff. All fit the bill and good training is crucial. The GSD's will do better in harsh weather (Iowa) might be a consideration also.

Had to put down my best friend the other day, my alpha male GSD...he was almost 13. He was my shadow. RIP Harmony.....

Go to the pound and get a rescue mutt, hound mixes are the best. They live the longest and will be your best buddy, and yes they will guard you with their lives if needed.

Its been my experience. if you dint get Them early. its difficult to get the bond you get with a Doberman. The aloof trait hurts in that aspect.

We rescued a hound/bird/coon dog from the pound about 10 years ago. Whatever breed he was he turned out to be the best watch dog I ever owned or been around. And I have no doubt, if he thought anyone was going to hurt anyone in the family it would have been on. He had a different bark when he seen a strange person vs something like another animal or cat. Named him Hunter appropriately because he had unbelievable smell, sight and hearing. Got loose and was running with one of our other dogs and got hit a few years ago. Really miss him. This pic was when he was a pup.

I own a single 110lb Gotti APBT now, and owned APBT for 20+ years
I am not claiming they are the "best" but their notoriety scares the sh** out of hood rats
.
Loving dogs, but EXTREMELY tenacious and once prey drive goes in FULL gear, ur f**ked.
(Even tho all mine have been family dogs, not guard dogs)

In 1997 we moved into a house across from what I thought was regular apartments.
I was wrong, it was all Section hood rat Crack slingers.

1998, I received a call that my house was broken into, and I flew home.
On scene officer was laughing, and I asked him WTF he was laughing for.

He showed me they kicked in the front door.........saw the 2 pit bulls
, 1 rottweiler, and Swiss mtn dog and PROMPTLY closed the door.
When you opened the door there was a split level landing, and 7 stairs up
All the dogs always came to greet you upon entering.

He was right......nothing was missing, and I started laughing too.

Dobermans, German Shephards, Rottweillers, large Bully breeds.
All have power, energy, speed, and pros and cons.

Every single one was the most feared in American media history in an era

GSD were most feared early 20th century til
Doberman most feared 1950s til 1970s some 80s
Rottweiler also 70s and 80s
Then the APBT has been on Media radar #1 since 90s ( even tho in USA since 1800s)

Basically the ghetto element realized their potential

I second the Great Pyrenees suggestion. They are hardheaded, difficult to train, and bark a lot. They are also some of the most loyal, loving, and protective dogs there are. If they aren't able to protect a member of their pack they will die trying.

If you want something versatile, yet protective, and downright crazy at times. Chessy.

Very loyal and protective to their families, unpredictably crazy towards strangers. Crazy that you can see in their eyes.

Much the same of what was said about the Pyrenees above.

and they make a great gun/working dog.

I had a male Fila years ago. Good boy but dumb as a post. This dog does one thing extremely well... guard property. But he required extensive training by an Alpha male...Me. Very headstrong. Not tolerant of strangers. If there is any way someone can get in your perimeter, even innocently, the dog will tear them apart. Keep this in mind. This dog will defend his owners and "his property" to his last breath. They are 110-120 lbs of nuclear option. Very few situations are suitable for this dog. We would only have our electric meter read every 3rd month by appointment. Visitors had to be warned to not raise a hand to anyone or wrestle with the kids. They do not differentiate between masked ,armed intruders and 10 yr old kid dipshits trespassing. Equal opportunity killers.

Ultimate in bad assery? Caucasian Ovcharka. Would shred any bi-ped and every canine mentioned.

Me personally would be a Boerbol. Pretty much a S. African Rottweiler. Loyal, protective, big, and I dig their look.

Guard dogs are good for one go-round basically. They will usually alert you. However, they are not impervious to poison nor bullets no matter how intimidating or aggressive.
Love the Great Pyrenees as previously mentioned, and German Shepherds as well. I have a mutt now and we have a mutual trust. He already trusts me with his life, and I figure that he'd give his for mine. No better bond than between a man and his dog(s). Humans are just too flaky.

In a SHTF scenario they are a liability. They give away your position & consume precious calories that would otherwise by reserved for the people family.

But I concur a dogs loyalty is unrivaled.

My Schnoodle is a great watchdog and more aggressive than the 70# Boxer/Red Heeler mix who loves everybody. I leave the guarding part up to me, so long as they can warn me first.

No bullshit, a yappy Chihuahua is the best guard dog. That piercing bark is basically nature's home alarm.

Hes got a point. Years ago lived with a few other guys in a big house we rented on the water and one roommate had a chihuahua and a large boxer.

We came to appreciate the chihuahuas 'early warning radar'... if a leaf turned over in the driveway, she'd alert, mildly bark and stare at the front door. If a louder noise happened, she bark enough to wake up the boxer...lol.
