so im trying to bring a Romy stock set down to bare wood, and it being a bugger.
1st coat: took most of the clear off, wiped down 2nd coat: took the rest of the clear off, so im at wood now, but its still darkly stained. wiped off. Rinsed: used mineral spirits to get the citristrip off and then used alcohol to try and get at the stain. helped a little, but its still pretty dark 3rd coat: just applied after lightly 400 grit sanding a little just to open the pores a little. is this stuff supposed to remove the stain? it just seems to be working on the clear coat, and leaving the stain alone. help?

The original finish is Amber Shellac. It removes pretty easily with stripper etc.
Here is a strip & bleach routine on a Romy stock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfSwo9qBIWI |

There are better stripper products vs citristrip. It is safer but not as effective as other chemicals and/or strippers. Shellac is not a hard material to strip in general.

The instructions on the Citristrip say to apply more, let it soak a bit, then rub with a green scrubbie.

I had the same issue just this week trying to get a stock to match the handguards. Citristrip removed the amber shellac but will not eliminate the stain. Bleach the stock. It works great.

^^^^This^^^^ Use orbital sander with 150 grit, then 220 grit. Sand carefully to take off only what you need to get to bare wood. It doesn't take much.

thanks yall. theyre soaking in bleach right now, and ill see if that gets it light enough. im not trying to have a light natural stock, but i want to get it enough so that my stain dosent make it super dark.
this is the stain im using: ![]() ![]() now that im looking at it on furniture, it looks a little yellow, so i might just keep a little stain on there to darken it up a bit. will post pics of the whole process when its through

You really have to sand to get most stains out. I soak in gas to get off the cosmo and stuff to do my initial cleaning. BIX is my favorite stripper but all it does is remove the top layers of shellac, urethane or whatever crud is there. I both soak furniture in a water and bleach solution for the dirt and then sand to get down to good wood. I also do a dunk in light vinegar to neutralize the bleach solution by the way. Check out some of the stickies about refinishing wood at the top of gunsmithing.
