A few years ago RPK-74M was unobtainium in the US.

Thanks to the vepr 1v line, k-var barrels, and the influx of parts and accessories straight from Russia, there are now 20 or so built RPK-74M rifles stateside. I would venture to say there are probably as many or more not yet completed.

Not jumping on one of the 5.56 Veprs and associated 5.45 parts from KVAR might be one of the few AK regrets I hold....

Just wait for a nice Vepr 1v to pop up for sale. It took me about 2 years to find one in the condition and price I was comfortable with. Let me tell you tho, it wasn't cheap so expect to pay a nice amount for one.

This. Same goes for the barrel.

Even I was late in the game as far as deals go. Irierider has less in his RPK-74M, PO3.5x21p, and suppressor than I have in just my rifle...

I must say though, it has been worth ever penny I paid. It's a rifle I never plan to part with and one the favorites in my collection. I plan on leaving mine 5.56 though as I don't plan on shooting it much. It's close enough imo.

Worth every penny for sure. I did have it converted to 5.45, and it is a shooter. Even so, it will hold it's value exceptionally well considering how rare they are in the US.

Chknfkr,
Beautiful rifle. Hope to have one someday, have the major parts except front trunion. Thinking of going with modified romy rpk47 trunion.

Have yu got yours back from Ted Marshall? Do yu have a contact number for him? I have all major parts to build one except front trunion, have read he can modify a romy rpk47 trunion to work. Would like to contact him to see if he is interested in doing the build.

Does the hole on back side of receiver towards stock to release folder or does latch on left side release or both?

Yep, both with the more modern RPK folders, but interestingly with the original RPKS, you had to use the hole to fold the stock.

I am sure there's a fowlic joke in there somewhere, but too tired to look for it tonight.

I have a 1V but do not think I would do this mod to mine. I totally understand doing this if you really wanted a RPK74S.

Nice looking rifle, figured it would be a good shooter.

There is a guy with an older KVAR 5.45 barrel for sale but he wants $950.

Chkn,

If you dont mind , what was the final price of the build? Ive always wanted one but not sure i have the patience to find the parts. Well i think the barrel wouldnbe the hardest And longest part to obtain.

Amazing rifle btw.

AK74NOLA , that should be doable. While Izhmash made a number of small but noticeable changes from the AK74 to the AK74M, Molot was more consistant with their parts.

But there are some differences. For example the birdcage flash hider is slimmer on the '74M vs the orig '74.
Also the dimpled gas block, which I know you know already.

I have a Vector '88 RPK74 kit build here and that FIME VEPR FM-RPK74 that recently came in (which is dated 2016).
If i can help with parts comparisons, detailed stuff like that, please just ask and I'd be happy to.
While taking pictures isn't my strong suit hehe, i can at least describe things to you and/or ask someone to snap a couple photos now and again.

Figure if you are going to do a clone, might as well do it as right as possible eh?
