As someone who runs an RF/EMC product testing lab as part of my day job, I can tell you, thats NOT an "emp" test. It's a radiated immunity test with a rather low power Amplifier Research RF amp. The vehicle is way below the main lobe of RF coming off that antenna too, so most of the power being emitted by the AR amp and oscillator is passing OVER the car and (illegally) disappearing into the atmosphere.

EMP emphasizes "P" --- pulse. An RF oscillator and amp into a log periodic antenna is NOT a pulse test. A pulse test would have a very large, low impedance energy source (typically a large capacitor) to dump a ton of energy in a very short time --- as a Nuke does.

That would include every single car. (even a diesel needs to start and warm glow plugs). Cars that are pre-electronic (say, pre-1968 or so) should be good to go , assuming they're not blown to bits.

New vehicles i'll admit, will be a hella lot more likely to do so, but the amount of ambient electrons required to do this is staggering, it takes 25,000 volts to make a spark jump one inch. Modern ignition systems are already putting out 20K or better with every firing.

In my old carb'ed vehicles it simply isn't going to happen.
You do understand that chassis ground on the car isn't earth ground right? The situation may not be as rosy as you're suggesting. The people who really know aren't saying. But judging from what is done to military aircraft and ground vehicles to make them robust to an EMP I'd guess cars aren't going to be unaffected.

Meaning EMP protected it is not. Same with allll the other military diesels.

No more EMP protection.

But...they are still runnin 2 stroke diesels..bwahahahaha!
I believe the old deuce and 1/2s are all long gone from all the service branches.

This guy is pretty good and I have read 1 or 2 of his books. His you tube vids do a good job of demonstrating efficacy

Not to have to roll my eyes at ya again...but that's what this whole thread is about, yes they can be affected, yes there are countermeasures. And most importantly, if you're listening to engineers instead of technicians you are already fucked.

Better have a vehicle that can run on anything from gasoline to cooking oil to moonshine. You can shield your car all you want but it will only be good for the gas that's in the tank. Gas pumps won't have EMP protection, and won't yield gas even in a simple black out after their generators wear out, and the generators may not survive the EMP. Then again the 200-300 miles in your tank may be all you need to live another day...

This works pretty well for EMP. Buy a spare solenoid and keep it in a faraday cage if it concerns you that much.

That's basically a convertible in a real bad world situation.

Not very likely you'll retain that very long......
