Default 7.62x39 Hollow point ?

Does anyone like hollow points?
I've almost always bought FMJ's It's been so long since I bought or shot hollow points that I can't remember why I quit buying them. I guess what I want to know is accuracy and if they have any feeding issues. Thanks!

A lot of hollow points are loaded shorter than FMJ ammo and don't feed in every AK. other than being legal for hunting most 7.62x39 don't expand much if any.

Almost all the Brown Bear I have shot was HP. No problems. Have not compared it to anything else in terms of accuracy.

Yep. This.

I've shot tons of differnt things w/ HP 7.62x39 and it doesn't really expand much at all. They don't seem as hot to me either. If you don't have a bullet guide the HP may jam against the breechface. My 5,45 did this too actually but that may be more a magazine issue than anything else...

If accuracy is your goal, stay away from wolf. If ballistic damage is your goal, go soft point or yugo surplus. Its seem to share some characteristics with 5.45 as far as tumbling.

If you want both, buy 5.45.

The hollow points jammed ALL THE time in my yugo m70, a litle crative filing of the feed ramp and now it feeds fine.

I've found that a light touch with a Cratex wheel on a Dremel on the front of the mag well (removing any sharp edges) will fix most HP feeding problems in AKs...

Default For What

For what it may be worth, in my limited experience with Tula-brand (before Wolf) white box hollow-pointed 7.62mm bullets, dynamic expansion in water filled 2-liter plastic bottles does occur when hit full on so the pill passes thru the greatest depth possible presented to it. Otherwise, a glancing blow does not produce anything more trauma than a FMJ produces.

YMMV and probably will.

Comrades have killed medium sized deer with commercial Russian HP bullets so I'm thinking they can be a show stopper. Shot placement, as always, is the crucial factor.

Wolf "military classic" HP is said to be the best performer of the bunch. Dunno myself. Buy some and shoot into wet telephone directories to produce truth rather than internet bunk.

Seems its easiest to find the HP's cheap for me so it what I've been buying. My m70ab2 eats any ammo I find laying around.

Ive got some wolf military classic hollowpoints... I only attemted to shoot 1 group to see what I get at 25m, it ended up a 1 inch group....so that would of been 4inch at 100m if I did my part....and I filled 3 waterjugs and shot from about 10 yards, it expanded really well, the led part come out the side of the 2nd jug and was laying right beside it....I thought I had the bullet somewhere but I cant find it but if I remember right the jacket expanded to almost 3/4 of an inch...the lead and jacket seperated...the peice of lead expanded just about as far..it also fragmented a little.......I would say its a pretty good deer rd. for under 100 yds... Ive never had any problems with hp's in my WASR 10/63... golden bear hollowpoints seem a little more accurate

This has been my experience as well. Wolf Military Classic HP WILL expand like crazy and is also quite frangible. I have even recovered rounds of WMC HP in dirt that had expanded. If you look real close to a WMC HP you will see that the jacket is pre-scored on the inside. In fact, from my experience, if I were to use it for hunting Deer, I would be afraid that it would expand to fast and not reach the vitals.

Never had a feeding problem with hollow points in both of my Saigas. I have shot tons.

I have had a few feeding failures with soft points but I only use them for hunting.

my Chinese 7.62x39 AK will not feed softpoints at all, now both of my Saiga .223 conversions will eat anything you put in them.

other than the things already discussed, the lead in Russian hollowpoints can shift inside the jacket; that can let air into the brass/powder. Shake your hollowpoints and you will fill the lead shift back and forth in a percentage of them.
