Default Saiga .308

Got a chance to pick up an unconverted saiga .308 with a 16" barrel and one magazine for $600. Is it worth it? I have no idea what these things are going for now.

Bought my NIB Zastava M77 PS .308 for $649.
Worried about mags too.
Got a bunch of Csspecs mags for it and they work great!

16 inch saiga 308s are beasts. Just be ready to modify aftermarket mags to function. I have not tried the csspecs magazines. You should defiantly buy it.

I'm kicking myself for not getting one of the 308's when they were plentiful.

$600 is great so long as its not beat to shit

csspec mags gtg, as are the OEMs. OEM mags are stupid expensive tho, even though you can mod them from 8 rounds to 10, or use csspec conversion kits to get to 10 rounds. (assuming they are still being sold)

The 8 to 10 conversion kits are out of production. I made 200 of the last version in 2012 it took about five years to sell out.. There are just not enough original magazines out there to modify.

The Saiga .308 magazines still sell fairly well. At some point here I need to update the design a little, like what we did with the Vepr .308

Out of curiousity, what changes? I only have one nitpick with the s308 mags-- the dang floorplate edges are sharp as hell

Likely a whole new design.. The current design was drawn on a notebook about 20 sheets or so back in mid 2010 . So there is nothing to recycle even if I wanted to.

The old design has a few issues but it does work.
The old magazine was a product of our capabilities in 2010. Back then we had manual machines and a few small welders two presses with the largest one being 38 ton. Currently I have a CNC mill, CNC fiber laser, several large water cooled spot welders, over a dozen presses with the largest being a 350 ton monster..

We can make something so much better now.

Fortunately csspec has offered us viable alternatives and IMO, superiorly made mags from the OEM mags. The factory mags are OK. They tend to be expensive on the hi caps, otherwise limited capacity but steel trumps plastic and if your gun fails you can beat them to death with the magazine.

I would absolutely go for it. with CSS mags available mags are a non-issue albeit not as cheap as AR ten mags have dropped since magpul entered the game.

The recoil on my converted S.308 16" w M-72 muzzle brake on it is noticeably less than on my PTR-91 w 16" barrel. Recoil on my 14.5" AR-10 (PSA) feels about the same

Speaking of csspecs mags, their website shows the 6.5 grendel mags as "current" under the coming soon tab. I'm pretty excited about that.

I have a MANTIS brake on my Saiga .308 with 16" barrel and have shot 300 rounds at one sitting with no ill effects to my old shoulders and bones. The MANTIS is really, I mean really loud but gentle on the recoil. Shoots some epic fireballs too.

I'd say get it. I lucked out with my gun show $450 for a saiga .308 sporter with 8 original mags. Sold all but 2 mags which brought the rifle down to $150 and got a couple CSSPECS mags. Come tomorrow I m finally getting it back in a crazy border guard replica finish on the wood (full conversion with akm furniture) with rare Russian butt plate. Its gonna be sick!

Be sure to fit them if needed before use.. And when you fire the first time have the magazine over something that will catch it, because if fitting is not right it IS going to fall out.

Reviving this as I am picking up a 21" .308 tomorrow. Has two magazines with it but I was wondering about Ammo. Do they eat the steel like an AK does or are the picky?

I owned one a few years ago...It was awesome.
Sold it for $650. (more than I had in it)
It is one of the only guns I halfway regret selling.
I say go for it!

Any difference in accuracy between the 16" and the 21.8"? Reading some posts on the web there seems to be this common theme of barrel whip out of the longer barrel causing the 16" to be more accurate because it is shorter and more rigid. Anyone here own both and notice any difference to buy one over the other?

I guess I am the only one who hasn't had much luck with the CSSPECS. They're the only mag that is ridiculously loose in my Saiga 308.

Did some of the Saiga .308s come without the bolt hold open? Mine does not have one and there is no evidence that there was one.

Does your magazine catch fully throw? if not then you actually need to fit the magazine so that the catch grabs.. If the catch does fully throw on our magazine than you should probably just change the catch out, because our magazines run on the big side of standard for Saiga .308s.

There are so many variations on the Saiga .308 that I have almost stopped making magazines for them multiple times.. The factory did such a lousy job maintaining consistency that the factory magazines are not really compatible with all Saiga .308 rifles.. The bad batches normally happened around the times they had bankruptcies or labor strikes, which happened a lot.. Same story with the 20 gauge shotguns. The model was not popular enough to get much consistency and too inconsistent to get much popularity... A rather vicious cycle.

I kinda think that the factory felt that the saiga was a hunting rifle and one magazine was just fine, so they would manually mill the magazines to fit the batch lot of rifles rather than adjust the rifles to fit a standard magazine. Almost like they intentionally hamstrung the rifles to not be consistent.
