Default Action range rifle

At my club we are limited to pistols, shotguns, .22lr, and pistol caliber carbines on the action range. I want a semi auto rifle to use in the action bay. I dont have much $$ and narrowed it down to a ruger 10/22 and a hi point 9mm rifle. What would all you wise folks pick? I also want it to possibly be pushed into service as a weapon

I’d go 10/22. Countless mods you can do and is the gold standard of .22 semi auto rifles

If you plan to use it outside the range I’d take a 9mm over a .22lr

I’ve got a Ruger Charger pistol and a High Point .45 carbine. Both are reliable and accurate. The Ruger will have a lot more aftermarket upgrades & goodies.

Can’t think of any other pistol caliber carbines for under $400 that are better.

Why not an AR with a .22lr adapter? That way you can always slap in the 5.56/.223 BCG

I'd second this, comes as a takedown too which is nice and takes GLOCK mags..
If $$ is an issue 10-22 takedown with threaded barrel..

Ruger PC9 looks like it fits your needs perfectly, street price is supposedly around $550 and uses the glockazines so you can get some 33 round sticks to feed it in 9mm

https://gunprime.com/product/beretta...2-series-mags/

Beretta Storm Carbine in 9mm, less than 6 bills.

AR in 9mm can be had for less than that.

Scorpion Evo pistol or carbine.

Some options that are relatively inexpensive, although more than a Hi Point carbine.

Either of these. If you want to use it as a defense weapon you want at least a 9mm and you don't want a Hi-Point. At that price I need to grab a couple more CX4 carbines now.

All the above comments were on target, so to speak. If however one is intent on picking up a Ruger 10/22, there are some factory versions now made by Ruger that are quite ergo and with features worth of mention. I saw one factory Ruger 10/22 at the Lakeland Show last weekend for $475.00 that had a metal body "similar" to an AR and a long raised Picitinny rail on the top of receiver and not a standard barrel but not a heavy either. Pistol grip and plenty of attachment points. I haven't looked up the model, but the rifle impressed me. It actually takes a lot to impress me.

Save up just a couple of hundred extra and get the new Ruger PC 9mm carbine over the 10/22 or HiPoint. The HiPoint is a great gun, but you'll be limited to 10 rounds, or maybe 20 with the aftermarket boomerang mags. I have a Beretta CX4, and it's an excellent firearm, but it will cost a $150-250 more than the new Ruger and I don't see any advantages over the Ruger. Ringing steel with 9mm will be far more satisfying than with 22 lr.
