Default PSL Advice Needed

In a few months I'm going to be in the market for a DMR/PSL. I have been pondering a rifle to buy for some time now and the PSL keeps my attention. I want a reliable shooter not a safe queen. I live in the sticks so I can shoot whenever I want.

I've noticed the prices are all over the place low to high $1,200 to 2,200. It seems the PSL incorrectly labeled dragunov svd demand the highest price. I know the PSL is NOT a sniper rifle nor is it close to an SVD. It is a DMR. Or an AK on steroids.

What should I look for when considering a purchase? I do know to make sure the mags work as there are issues with them, such as mags fitted to individual rifle. I have never shot one, hell never even held one. Its an itch that needs scratched.

I need expert first hand from you all before I drop that kind of money!!

As a former PSL owner I would opt for a Vepr, MUCH better made gun & more reasonably priced(for now). Mags are actually cheaper too. With the money saved you can pick up a custom stock set at Rhineland Arms for as little as $150 (Walnut) & still be into the package for much less than a currenty priced PSL. Ironwood also has sets but damn they're spendy. Current price for a 20" Vepr at Atlantic is under $850.

ETA: If you have to have a PSL, I would not pay more than $1200 tops(w/scope & 2 mags), but that's still too much imo when compared to the Vepr.

The PSL is a great rifle. The VEPR x54r is a single stack but CSSpecs has that covered for us so far. Each rifle has its neg and pos. Both are DMR's. PSL is made to hit a man sized target with a scoped shot at longer range, that's it. As long as you use the ammunition that it is designed to run "light ball" you should be fine. Mags and parts for the PSl are plentiful in comparison. Mags are still very affordable, bolts, barrel parts and other parts that could wear out are still to be had. The PSL is a combat proven weapon. Has seen much action on many conflict areas. Its earned the name "Sniper Rifle of the Jihad." over 10 years ago. It is also in active service still in the Romanian military. It will do its job. Its neg attributes have been grossly exaggerated imho. The VEPR is a fine rifle. It is well made and some claim superior accuracy. It has a bit more robust receiver. I have both and the PSL is one to get before they are stupid priced, apparently VEPR's are gonna just keep being VEPR's. Glad to have em... Both use the AK long stroke piston action. Molot claims VEPR's are fine to run heavy ball but I personally shy away from it. $1200 is about avg. PSL price.

Nice well thought out post thank you! I have read light ball is the only way to go. If I did find a PSL in the 1200 range, how could I tell if heavy ball ammo was used? A lot of adds state barely shot hardly used. That is if the seller is honest. I still have a few months to think things over.

Looks like PSL mags have dropped to reasonable, found some(used) at SGAmmo for $39. Even cheaper than CSSpecs at $52, a lot better than the $75/mag that I was seeing for a while. Sellers on GB are still shooting for the moon with their prices(as always).

I haven't seen any selling at those ankle grabbing prices either. Money talks

Buy an imported psl not a kit build if you have a choice. My original barrel century kit built psl has been great, but I wish it was a factory gun.
