Default Gunbroker SVD for the price of a Tiger

I saw this earlier and emailed the seller asking for a picture of the cartouche. It's a 1972 Russian SVD. What do you guys think, a good deal at $4,795? I was not the buyer.

Killer deal. The phosphate finish is correct for an early 72' rifle as well. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat if I'd seen the auction.

The buyer has an FFL, so I'm sure he's going to try and flip it for a huge profit. Hell of a score though.

Correct, I stand corrected. Does anyone recall these 100 bringing significantly more than the others? Even the ugly bring backs?

Yes there have been a few SVDs that were not refurbished come up for sale- this one is a bring back of some form that appears to me to have been refurbished somewhere along the way.
The 100 KBI's that were brought in were of the more modern design if memory serves me correctly.

I would have not risked even that much money on such a short and weird Gunbroker add.

I'd love an SVD as much as anyone but I get turned off quick if people are asking thousands of dollars and then can't be bothered to put up a good description and all that. It all looked fishy to me even if it was a legit rifle it seemed too good to be true

Buyer got ripped off....$4795.00 and he didn't even get a scope with it!

WolfmanReid- Do you think that finish is original? When did the Soviets switch to the later black finish?

I agree that auction looked a lot like a Armslist scam. Hope it all works out for both parties.

You are correct. The 1991 KBIs have the internal lightening cuts a couple other "modern" features which escape me at the moment.

I've got an identical looking 1972 SVD with a identical phosphate finish and refinished wood and have seen other early SVDs with similar finishes. However I have also seen a 1972 SVD only 35 serial number off mine with a black paint finish. I suspect that my rifle and this one may be arsenal refurbished and rebarreled somewhere along the way but I have no way to prove that. On the other hand maybe the painted one was a later refurb?

Other than the lack of external lightening cuts, the KBI guns lack lightening cuts on the rear sight leaf and front sight base, have a totally redesigned bolt carrier and most (but not all) have a one-piece cast gas block/sling mount like the SVDS instead of the earlier separate sling mount. They also have a completely different simplified bolt cam surface pinned into the receiver.

Well sure...everyone knows that ...and other stuff 'cause these are so common. Why, you can't swing a dead cat without knocking over racks of these things nowadays...

WolfmanReid-Actually, I own a NDM 86 and a military SVD and always appreciate learning good info here. Thanks for posting!

Anyone smart enough to fish for buyers in this way is smart enough to know what they're going for. Just FWIW to anyone that saw this comment and thinks they're going to swoop in and get it for $2000.

I've only seen 1 on GB, and it's been listed a few times at $7K with no bites. I had the opportunity to pick it up with another buy, and it just doesn't float my boat.
