Default new m590a1 1 range trip later.....errrrr

For your viewing pleasure....

What a mess, I don’t know if the action is riding crooked but the bolt is grinding its way around in this receiver. 45 rounds later here it is. NONE of my shotguns have seen this kind of damage. It might be hard to tell in the pics but the bolt is literally etching and destroying the receiver. I will say the action was a bit stiff when I got it but I assumed it was break in time....

I won this blackwater at a recent Whitetails event, it seen 6 boxes of
olen mil OO buck and a few rounds of federal birdshot. Hard to see in the photos bit those scratches are deep and the wear is aggressive.

not your typical break in wear, below is a pic where the bolt has grinded the edge off the receiver to a 45 deg angle literally the bolt is shaving the sides of the receiver !

and another pic here

I`ll go ahead and add this to my "Reasons not to buy a Mossberg" list.

I have had my 590a1 for a couple years with no malfunctions at all. Personally I love it.

pull the action tube and make sure the bolt is sitting in the arms correctly, and that the arms are sitting in the receiver correctly.

When I first got my Mossberg 500 and broke it down to understand how to put it back together, afte reassembly the bolt was slightly crooked in the reiver due to how the arm lockup was.....still allowed me to "pump" / run the action but it was definitely stiffer and guaged the inside of receiver.......not sure if it would have allowed me to fire the gun but could be whats happening

I agree with sublimeon in this, your bolt sounds like it’s not installed right, if it is actually messed up then mossberg will take care of you. I’ve had a 590 SP for 8 years now and it’s seen box after box of slugs, 00, and various bird shot. Take it apart, break that thing down and check out your bolt against others and see if there’s something mechanically incorrect, if so then call mossberg. If not then pull up a detailed YouTube video and follow it step by step to ensure you’ve got it together correctly. It’s unfortunate that your receiver is already damaged but the good news is that you should be able directly swap at the very least, the mag tube/pump assembly and barrel to a new receiver off any 500/590 shotgun and possibly the inards too, there are plenty of cheap used 500’s around

I've had a Mossy 590 SP for over 10 years with lots of rounds through it ... never a issue.

My Mossberg 500 is my favorite shotgun. You 590 is far better. I agree with others. Mossberg will make it right, even if you screwed something up.

My Mossberg 500 and 590 Shockwave have been flawless.
Contact Mossberg immediately and get it fixed.

They should take care of you.

I've had a 500 for 24 years and beaten the hell out of it. Only failure has been a worn out tang safety. (this happens, the spring gets weak and the detent won't hold under recoil, causing it slip down and engage the safety. Easy fix)

Wow what a mess. Good luck w it Indy. Hopefully this is an isolated incident. I've had a 590 A1 SP for several years and it is my favorite 12 Gauge. Flawless, as a pump shotgun should be.

I really want to buy a new 870 or 590 w a pic rail AND GRS, but stories like this one w similar but worse about the new 870s really make me hesitate. I already have several self defense 12 Gauges, but really want one w both pic rail for an RDS and GRS.

Just curious, having owned both myself. How is the 590 "far better"? I've had a 500A for 33 years and 10s of thousands of rounds with nothing replaced and nothing worn out except the finish. The plastic safety and polymer trigger guard haven't broken and it can still bust clays all day. I'm thinking my stock 1985 500A BUILT in N. Haven, CT. (not assembled in Texaco from Mexican and Chinese components like nowadays) will outlast me. When I needed some money I consignment sold my 2 year old 590. Kept the lighter, more versatile 500A. Nothing wrong with the 590, but I'd rather have a 1980-1991 era 500A for the money. When I bought the 590 I expected a huge difference. It's an overbuilt 500, that's all. And they ain't cheap.

They aren't cheap, but not that expensive either...
590A1 is milspec without plastic parts.
I'm thinking there's more than that as an improvement.
Own both 500 and 590A1 (sort of Shockwave 590 upgraded to A1).
IMHO there really is a difference...

But that's just me...

Came back yesterday they said they replaced the ejector.
Looks like they polished off the ghost printed Blackwater Logo a bit better for me too.

Buy a minty M3 instead. M4s/M1040s are far over priced nowadays.

That sucks but I still think Mossbergs and the Hawk 982 is a better bet over any of the garbage Freedom Group comes out with these days. I've bought 3 Mossbergs over the years but currently only have M590A1 SPX, definitely the nicest Mossberg I've shot yet. I sold my 20" 500 and 18.5" 500 with M4 style stock just because the SPX is the configuration I wanted in the first place.

Out of those 3 Mossbergs, zero issues, 100% reliable. The Hawk only had the rear sight fall out from lack of Loctite but hasn't been an issue since I loctited it. Then again the overpriced Nighthawk customized 870 I used to have had the Mesa Tactical side saddle fall off on me too from lack of loctite.

I love the Hawk 982. I find it, and my old Wingmaster MUCH more pleasant to shoot than my 500.

I just value the heavier mil spec components of the 590a1. Not enough for me to actually run out and BUY one though! Looks like you and I will just have to keep shooting our "lowly" 500's!
