Default Producing 54r extractors

I should have a prototype in about a month.

Extractors will be made of 4340 steel, hardened to C44. The original Vepr extractors are 3310 tool steel augmented with tungsten. That exotic steel isn't available, so I chose 4340 as a viable alternative.

As with all of my projects, we'll see how well they work, and how well they go over.

If priced fairly, I would be interested in extractors for the vepr 308 & vepr 12. Good luck with your prototype.

The 308 Vepr extractor is up next, but it'll probably be a very long time before I delve into the Vepr 12 stuff.

I'd be in for some 54r if they work and meet or exceed the oem ones.

Glad to hear it!

I'm also glad to see you made it out of Illinois in one piece, with your sanity intact.

I picked up a couple of spares the last time Legion had them in stock. However, if the ones you make are better, count me in.

How were you able to determine the type of steel used in the extractors? Molot/Ishmash generally don't disclose that kind of stuff.

I had the original extractor spectral analyzed, and received a really detailed breakdown of the (somewhat exotic) metal Russia used.

I just made the final payment on the extractors. The fab shop sent this image to me of the extractors. They look good. Now let's see how well they work, if they fit like they're supposed to, and if they wear well and don't break. Time will tell.

I may need some testers. I'm willing to sell a few at my cost ($25.00ea) to a few testers. I'll be asking for volunteers once they arrive at my shop.

I don't. I've just read anecdotal accounts of members desperately seeking replacements because their OEM extractors had broken, or were failing to extract/wearing badly.

I have an ad up in the marketplace. Looking for testers. Testers get a discount.

Click on Cerephim's name in the post above. Click on "View Public Profile". Click on the "Statistics" tab. Click on "Find all threads started by Cerephim". Click on his thread titled "WTS: Vepr 54r extractors".

Or search the marketplace again. I bumped it.

Thank you very much for the Vepr support. You are doing the firing pins to fit the FM-AK47-11's, too? Do you have the firing pin springs? When do you expect to get the extractors to market? Price?
Thanks and regards,
DD

I received my Vepr-54R extractor this past Thursday, I installed it yesterday and took the rifle out this morning. The quality of the part seems very good, and there were no fitment issues on my rifle.

I ran 60 rounds of steel-cased Wolf through the rifle this morning without any mishap whatsoever. The rifle still ejects the spent cases in the same direction, and with the same velocity it had with the OEM extractor. Examination of the spent cases does not reveal any gouging on the rims, or any other witness marks that would indicate a problem or potential malfunction with this new extractor.

With only 60 rounds on the part, durability has yet to be determined, but as with the spent cases, there are no marks or marring on the new extractor that would indicate any potential problems brewing in the future. Upon getting home and removing the extractor for closer inspection and cleaning, it appeared as pristine as it was before it's use.

The part will remain in the rifle until I die of old age, or the part fails; whichever occurs first (now that I think about it, if the part doesn't fail, it will likely remain in the rifle long after my death). I will continue to post evaluations as the round-count climbs.

200 rounds of steel case TulAmmo today, and zero extraction problems.
