Default WASR-2...value? Buy, not buy?

I keep seeing these popping up periodically in the marketplace, GB, etc. Was curious if people had reasonable idea of value is and how those who have them, like them?

I've got one.

It's not pretty, but I like it.

I gave $500.00 for it two years or so ago. I don't know what market value is.

I'd hold out and wait for a nice Sar 2 to come along. The Sar series came in before the Wasr's and are more correct in that they have dimpled receivers. Only bad thing is, the muzzles will not have threads unless the previous owner replaced the fsb. For the Sar 2 (or Sar 3) you can easily overcome this with the JMAC 22mm adapter if you don't want to buy the real deal 22mm fsb. One of my Sar 2's has the JMAC adapter and you'd never know unless you took the muzzle break off.

They are sturdy, dependable rifles...if not always the prettiest. Since they are imports, you get a milspec CHF & chromelined barrel. This is always a good thing in other calibers, but i feel a very great thing for a 5.45x39 rifle. US barrels in this caliber just have never overly impressed me, and with so much surplus corrosive ammo out there for it too, the chromelining is a good thing.

The WASR-2 isn't as desirable asa SAR-2 as it lacks receiver dimples, but if the price is right, why not?

Up until a couple years ago, getting the correct FSB and muzzle brake to deban a SAR-2 or WASR-2 could be very challenging. Luckily though now a pretty large number of surplus PA86/AIMS74 kits are on the market. So if you buy one of those, you can go as far with a clone project as you might wish. This could include the upswept cocking handle, wire folding stock with push button, and the previously rare bakelite upper handguard.

I'd not get into one for over $1k, but if you can find a nice WASR-2 for under $600 or SAR-2 for under $700, why not?

Also while these will take any AK74 magazines, original Romanian 30 rd steel ones are neat and not especially cheap. So if you find a rifle with 2-3 orig mags, that can add some bucks too.

You looking to buy one....soon?[/QUOTE]

Still mulling it over. I have a couple SAR2s that I love to shoot but are both headed towards AIMS74 projects. Was thinking about about a WASR2 as kind of a beater for plinking, shooting corrosive ammo, etc. Might still convert one SAR2 and leave the other “as is” and it can be the beater gun.

I have a WASR 2 I purchased years ago. Recently gave it a face lift., a paint job and a FSB/GB combo and some bakelite furniture etc.

A good solid shooter.

Agree with what has been said. However, some have had mag fitment issues as mine did. Rear of some mags had a hard time clearing center support rivet. Some minor dremel work on the mag fixed the issue. But still annoying.

THAT is a nice looking rifle.

Yours looks like a super model compared to mine.

Mine mostly lives in a tennis bag in the trunk.

What stock is that?

This is a beautiful face lift to the rifle. I love the Baklite hand guard set. I wish I had gotten on the 5.45 bandwagon years ago. To the OP, I just pulled the trigger on buying one, it was impulsive but the market is clearly drying up of any of these kind or rifles and in general with the trend the country is going and with the mid terms coming up, I would say buy it now before things get to whacky and prices really start to rise. I don't want to come off as fear mongering. I should have taken my own advice years ago and buy what I want before its gone just to have it and I kept buying 47's and I realized and made a panic/impulse buy for what I wanted. If you want it buy it. Happy hunting when looking for the right one and a deal!

The Wasr2 was my intro to the 5.45 master race. I picked it up a couple years ago for $400. It’s kind of an oddity in the ak realm, but a fine weapon nonetheless. If you can find one for a reasonable price, don’t hesitate to grab it.
With all this talk of wasr2, I had to take my out shooting yesterday and I’m glad I did. I have mine in Russian laminate with a vz58 (cnc warrior) brake which performs superbly.

I grabbed a Wasr2 a few years back from @akass and it's been a great shooter. It's as reliable as anything else I have. It came with the upswept bolt handle, so I have been able to get an AIMS74 bolt and carrier as a backup. The parts are identical and dropped in perfectly, so there are currently spare parts readily available, which wasn't always the case.

Overall, good guns.

And lets be honest, there aren't that many authentic factory built imports in 5.45x39 either, so our options are limited.

Romanian Romak-2 (and other similar), SAR-2, & WASR-2.
Bulgarian SLR105, SLR104FR, & SLR104UR.
Russian Izhmash Saiga & SGL31, and Molot VEPR variants.

And that's about it....its not relaly worth counting the Chinese 88S since under 100 of those ever came in, and today they bring huge bucks.

So the WASR-2 is a very solid option. Its good to have an original Comblock style CHF+Chrome barrel in an AK74 type too since the surplus ammo is corrosive and that projectile has quite a high velocity. Good idea to have a durable bore.

Wow. That rifle is purty, Blue. I love that bakelite furniture. Great job on the overall finish of the rifle as well.

There are a couple of types. I installed this one without the stabilizing tray. It does not have the external side spring that some have.

I looked at getting a wasr 2 while I was hunting for a 74. Ended up with a sar2, got a good deal on it, but mainly I just liked it better aesthetically. The dimples etc. but either one would serve you well

you sure about that? couple of "different" ones? if its a standard 90s Beryl stock, the there is only (1) type of supporting bracket. Not sure you remember but i did a tutorial on changing to beryl stock. And Briab (AZAK on akforum) just happened to be able to get like..20 of them for us. I had to go and get different screws at the hardware store and cut them to length. But stocks and brackets were all the same.

they were NOT interchangeable with Tantal bracket

I owned 5 of the Beryl stocks at one time. A mix of functional and a few needing repair in a parts lot I purchased. Replacement oversized pivot pins to repair loose stock and/or buttpads or broken springs. I found a parts source in Poland for the parts and repaired them. Sold off several.
Had one from Robert RTG as well. I think he still sells the stabilizing trays.

Some variation was present., Tension spring etc.IIRC.

They mount and function with or without the stabilizing tray. I only had two trays in the lot. I have one mounted on the WASR2 (no tray) and the other is not in use at resent. I initially had it on my pseudo Tantal to Beryl 5.56 build. Swapped out the sidefolder Beryl for the adjustable collapsing Beryl buttstock.

Nice looking rifle AKBLUE.
I'd love to find a bakelite hand guard set like that.
Never have seen any for sale.
